The University of Nebraska at Kearney( UNK) is completing an extensive renovation to the Calvin T. Ryan Library. Nebraska’s 1% for Art Law requires that 1% of all state-funded projects be set aside for a public art commission. The Nebraska Arts Council spearheaded UNK’s search and out of over 100 submissions the successful applicant was Leslie Iwai, an accomplished artist with a history of creating thought-provoking pieces in public spaces, galleries and museums. My story is about a tree that hates the spring. The tree is crotchety and doesn't enjoy the budding life that comes with the changing of the seasons. It enjoys winter, because it knows that winter is where it will always end up. The tree is bitter because it is so old. It has seen and experienced so much death in its life, that it hates the hope of life that spring brings with it. It has resigned itself to death and gloom.

Struggling to attain perfection is to be enchained and imprisoned by your own mind. It is to look at a blank piece of paper and imagine all that you could do wrong, rather than all that you could do right. Perfection comes in the form of constant erasing, frustration, and questioning; however, it is by daring to push against these chains that you can find true freedom. And it is when you discover this freedom that your entire world will change and you will no longer be bound by chains.

"The Rending" follows a woman’s healing journey as the Lord helps her confront her fragmented self. With His guidance, she watches her various identities peel away, revealing a small girl representing her core self. Through God's compassionate touch, the woman undergoes a transformative process of reintegration, ultimately accepting the broken parts of her, but more importantly, discovering the profound love and acceptance that the Lord has always held for her, completely independent of any piece of her identity.
