Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
"Reflections" explores experiences in my life revolving around my absent father's influence on my choices in men, and how the impact of absence and rejection altered my upbringing and family's dynamic as a whole. There are a lot of women out there like me who’ve blocked out the feelings that come with not having their father around, allowing room for the generations after to be affected. I wanted my story to connect with both childhood and adult women, inspiring them to face their own trauma. Ultimately proving how an unhealthy repetitiveness can be broken.

This thesis seeks to examine the relationship between myth and personhood. The societal constructs placed on us all, but specifically women, appear throughout cultures as mythology. Fictional narratives and stories have persisted throughout human history. However, perhaps due to a bias that stories offered nothing more than entertainment for the reader or perhaps that they are not useful outside of the realm of academia, the research within science academia has been lacking in literature on why these narratives have endured. Unfortunately, due to the lack of conversation across disciplines, particularly those of science and literature, this subject has not been thoroughly investigated through an interdisciplinary lens. This thesis is about one person’s journey from the stringent, fact-based world of technical writing to a creative place known as fiction writing. The Artist Statement explores the author’s journey into the world of creative writing and choice of genre. The critical paper is a sample of the process the author undertook to learn how to “show” a story. Instructional technical writers provide readers with a set of instructions or steps from information that already exists. Nothing is made up, and any visual provided is accompanied by pictures.
