When I set out to write about my body and what happened to me, I knew I was going to have to sit with parts of myself I had long silenced, overlooked, maybe even abandoned. When I first took a class on women's memoir writing I was struck by the power of the stories we read. I felt like a door had been opened for me, as I witnessed the importance of sharing one's personal lived history. The Syllabus for Bio. 013, Writing in the Sciences - Evolutionary Themes, is a College Writing 2 course that develops student skill in science writing for different audiences: Scientists writing for themselves (the Field journal); Scientists writing for other scientists (the Review article); and Scientists writing for students/ society ( an Essay for a periodical that utilizes analogy/metaphor). To inform this writing, students read and discuss Darwin's original works and the writings of more contemporary evolutionary theorists, including E. Mayr and S.J. Gould. This course is appropriate for incoming students as well as more advanced biology students.

Dual Immersion Programs: Are They Enough?, Samantha Renae Castillo

This study asks: How do middle school students attending a Spanish and English dual immersion program develop their biliteracy skills differently based on the extent of their exposure to and practice of both languages in the home environment? Deborah Brandt argues that sponsors invest in literacy tools in order to give other people access to language resources, allowing communication to be fostered through the passing on of information, as done between different generations. This research project examines how literacy sponsorship outside of the classroom impacts an individual’s bilingual development overall. In a pilot version of this study with two participants, …

Post-traumatic disorders have been included in some of the most popular narratives in mainstream culture. Though the early decades of movies included 1948’s The Best Days of Our Lives is an award-winning movie that follows three veterans home from World War II and depicts their struggles with reacclimating to society it became more popular after Vietnam veterans and their allies fought and protested for an appropriate diagnosis for PTSD after decades of it not being seen as a legitimate psychological disorder.
