In his essay 'A Winter Feast', literature professor Paul Schmidt unveils the layers of meaning that Pushkin wove into the description of a New Year’s feast in Eugene Onegin. But unusually, Schmidt continues his essay making the jump from literary criticism to food studies by musing on the various items on the menu without reference to Onegin, but rather to the cultural and philosophical context of food, bringing in such varied references as Brillat-Savarin and Arnold Schwarzenegger. This paper examines literature to determine how travel reshapes the culture of spiritual seeking in the United States from the early 1800s to the modern era. As travel evolved, the experience of travel has changed over time and the reshaping of American culture reflects the impact travel can have in a region. This paper also analyzes the roles of Christian missionaries and Evangelists in reshaping the culture of spiritual seeking in America and it analyzes the spiritual experience that is recognized by both atheistic and theistic travelers.

This thesis examines Fred Chappell’s virtually overlooked collection of poetry Family Gathering (2000), and how the poems operate within the mode of the grotesque. I argue that the poems illuminate both the southern grotesque and Roland Barthes’s theory of photography’s Operator, Spectator, and Spectrum. I address Family Gathering as a family photo album full of still shots, snapshots, and even selfies, which illumines how Chappell’s use of the grotesque in this collection derives more from its original association with visual arts rather than only depicting the grotesque typically associated with characteristics deemed explicitly shocking or terrifying. In biblical language, transfiguration refers to the "change in bodily appearance" of the crucified Christ revealing his "divine nature". In the same way, it can be said that the writer is metamorphosed through the process of writing by the creation either of an alter ego or of an imaginary double, be it, animal or inanimate. The first case proposes original figures of the "social status" of the writer. In the second, the latter borrows the voice of a cat or makes a piece of furniture or an intimate object to speak. In Mudimbe's novels, art depicts the author and his writings, through a play of substitution and decentering. The author uses the artistic medium to escape constraints of discursive, religious, political or sexual order and as a place of transfiguration of the characters' desires. Drawing from Ken Bugul's novel The Abandoned Baobab, generally considered as a projection of the autobiography of its author, this article shows that the novelist is revealed by veiling, and is thus subject to a self-objectification in which the fantasy narrative echoes the autobiographical narrative. Various self portraits are on display: feminist, rebel, accursed, failed, exiled. The text oscillates between the here and the elsewhere, inversing the fullness lived with the emptiness of there, thus confusing the here and the elsewhere. Three postures of liberation characterize the narrator's attitude: withdrawal, fascination and derision. Through various strategies, while committing to …
