This analytical study of mobile dating applications offers insight into how the gamification of dating shapes the perception and influences the pursuit of intimacy by users. This autoethnography is about different points in my life where I committed microaggressions towards the LGBTQ+ community specific to different genders, sexual orientations and/or how people in the community present themselves. I use “thick intersectionality” ‒ an embodied exploration of the complex particularities of individuals’ lives and identities associated with their race, class, gender, sexuality, and national locations ‒ as a means of portraying my message, voicing the emotions that I felt, and the identity I occupied at that moment. The Japanese Client is a novel within the hardboiled, noir fiction genre, a style that emerged during the era of Prohibition and features morally conflicted heroes, complex plotlines, larger-than-life characters, and a general air of intrigue. Perhaps the most important element of the noir novel is its protagonist’s search for what is good and true while surrounded by cynicism and corruption. We all know that the expedition we are planning and which, Inshallah, we shall undertake in the fall, has been attempted at least once before. But the documents in our archives that tell us of that earlier expedition into the Gobi are fragmented and contradictory. The most reliable of these documents indicates that the expedition failed, that its members desisted from their attempt to cross the fearsome desert, that there were casualties. This creative thesis consists of the first seven chapters of the novel, Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Darker. Set in two time periods, 2017 and 1849, the plot centers around a newly renovated castle hotel in County Cork, Ireland. Newlyweds, Alicia and Greg Silvan discover a bottle of absinthe that is Spanish in origin. Alicia is haunted by the ghost of former owner, Keira O’Shea, as well as the disappearance of her father in hurricane Katrina.
