The poems that comprise Murmuration are an act of vigilance in the face of loss. At certain moments in the distorted timeline of grief one searches the remaining world around them for signs of the beloved, signs that they are not simply gone but instead transformed or dispersed into another way of being. In this looking one's relationship to the external world undergoes a radical transformation of its own and demands a sustained attention from the bereaved that often draws from, but ultimately outruns cataloguing acts of memory. Appearing for the first time in English, Antoine Innocent’s 1906 novel Mimola or the Story of a Casket weaves the story of Mimola, daughter of Madame Georges, who suffers from an incurable nervous disease, with an investigation of the traditions of Haitian Vodou. Desperate to end her daughter’s affliction, Madame Georges goes on a pilgrimage across Haiti to Ville-Bonheur to help her ailing daughter. Along the way, she meets a woman whose son, Léon, suffers from a similar disorder. Will their mothers’ devotion be enough to ensure the children’s recovery? Run Me Dusk is a falling-out of love narrative about twenty-seven-year-old Milo who, after being broken up with by his boyfriend Red, flees from Illinois back to his hometown in southwestern Colorado to meditate on his place and purpose in life. The themes covered in this book are gay relationships, family relationships, mortality, and the natural world.

In some way the author is attempting to capture their interpretation of space and time inside the vehicle of language. The lens used in inspecting the world is biological and philosophical, seeking and hiding from the truth.

This is a book-length, hybrid collection of short stories and poetry with a critical introduction. The narrative of these stories and poems are told through the perspective of Xavi Muñoz and various characters related to him. In theme, this collection explores machismo and Xavi’s attempt at overcoming it by discovering the intersectionality between masculinity, sexuality, gender, and gender roles. In addition, the introduction theorizes about masculinity by relating it to water.

The problem addressed in this thesis is cultivating an answer to the question: what creates or comprises the sum total of my Blackness as a modern American woman living in our current political climate? I primarily use a read/call and response methodology, responding to both lived and hypothetical experiences that explore or demonstrate the ways that identity, race, gender, sexuality, regionality, religion, and the historical thumbprint intersect. “The Meadow and the Archive” is a short fictional story about a government archives branch operating in a totalitarian empire in which components of the natural world have been eradicated. Archivists observe and assist a woman whom manages to liberate an important element from a particular collection. It is hoped that this element will contain the beginnings of a wilderness that the empire has systematically worked to destroy. The transaction also offers hope for other subversive modes of archival use.

These three works of visual art and poetry emerged from our professional experience as librarians and poets at The University of Arizona Poetry Center, a special collection of contemporary poetry housed in a public university. Frequently described as a “living archive,” the Poetry Center’s library houses both open stacks designed for browsing and closed stacks containing archival collections related to contemporary poetry. Over the course of May 2017 - February 2018, I examined the role of a theatre director in the development of a new play. The play that I directed was written by Brandon Adam, and is titled Nice Jewish X. We developed the play using three different forms of performances as guideposts and opportunities for feedback. The three forms of performance were a closed cold reading, a rehearsed open reading, and a fully staged and produced production. If there is a lack of structured education of ethics in civil engineering, then another area of interest is to discover where engineers are being informally educated.
