The boards of the ship hummed beneath Carrice Leon’s feet, interlaced with the rhythmic beating of 170 oars against serene waters. In the distance, white spires were beginning to peak just above the starboard horizon, a shimmering beacon in the endless blue. They were making good time, despite the previous day’s storm. ABSTRACT The work of this book was pursued with the objective of exploring psychological and sociological causes and effects of the human condition with themes including family, love, solitude, loss, abandonment, estrangement, maternity, sex, and gender power dynamics--especially that of male dominance of women and varying female responses to this sociological organization--using characters, animals, settings and voices in the artistic medium of poetry. The assembly of the book is in the style of novel structure, but neither story nor chronology were considered in the order of organization as each poem is an independent piece. Critical Inquiries Into Irish Studies
Micheal O’Siadhail has published sixteen collections of poetry. He was awarded an Irish American Cultural Institute prize for poetry in 1982 and in 1998 the Marten Toonder prize for Literature. His poem suites, The Naked Flame, Summerfest and Earlsfort Suite were commissioned and set to music for performance and broadcasting. He has given poetry readings and broadcasts in Ireland, Britain, Europe and North America.

Fallow Futures: A Short Story, Jonathan Hope
The Goose
What will the future be like? And how will humans live with, within the natural world? As we hear more and more of natural phenomena and land formations that are not only protected but also granted legal rights equivalent to those of humans (recently, the Whanganui River in New Zealand), couldn’t we imagine this trend extending to other-than-humans? Wouldn’t the already-ubiquitous grasses, that cover approximately 40% of the earth’s ice-free terrestrial surface, be a good candidate for such a project? In this piece of speculative fiction, humans and grasses together build a future world.
