Still Life: Growing Up With Death - A Visual Memoir, Lindsey Roth-Rosen

This capstone is a multidimensional visual narrative project that incorporates heuristic methodology to illustrate complicated grief that emerged from early childhood loss. The memoir’s intention is to exemplify grief as a complex and mutable composite response to the death of my mother. One objective of this capstone is to understand melancholy, commonly associated with mental illness or symptomatic of depression, as an aesthetic emotion as well as a conduit for philosophical reflection. It was only with the application of set theory to my own personal life that I discovered my true identity and sexuality. In this exploratory, personal essay, I detail my own discovery of my sexuality through mathematics and how this math has become a lens through which I view the world. And, with new knowledge of literary criticism in hand, I can now retroactively describe the thoughts I had in this discovery process.

Comment un incident trivial – une dispute entre un Libanais chrétien et un ouvrier palestinien – peut-il devenir une affaire nationale à cause d’une simple insulte ? Le vrai sujet du film est le ressentiment que ressentent les chrétiens de Beyrouth-Est envers les Palestiniens, leurs anciens ennemis durant la guerre civile. La confrontation met en lumière l’évolution de la haine et l’impossibilité d’un pardon trente ans après la fin de la guerre. Le réalisateur fait ainsi preuve d’audace, traitant de front la question de l’amnésie/amnistie qui permit, de manière peut-être artificielle, la fin des combats.

After cofounding the Moscow Art Theatre with renowned colleagues such as Stanislavski and Danchenko, he left the company to regain his independence as an actor and stage director. Theatre for children is grounded in imaginative creativity and forms an educational, intellectual, and aesthetic tradition that refines a child’s spirit while developing taste, a sense of beauty, and openness. In Lebanon, plays designed for children began appearing in professional theatre venues in the late 1960s. The “Chouchou Children’s Theatre” was among the earliest and most significant initiatives, drawing a strong response from young audiences. In this article, I examine this phenomenon – which emerged spontaneously and without a clear methodology – with particular attention to audience reception.

This dissertation opens with a critical introduction that examines the role persona, reader, and implication play in the composition of the personal essay. Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory is then applied as a tool in an essayist’s exploration of how one’s communication choices impact life experiences. This section is followed by an explanation of the subject matter of the essays. The pedagogical chapter addresses the author’s experience with the student-centered teaching of a first creative writing class, lessons learned, theorists who affected the process, and suggestions for improvement as the author moves forward in postsecondary teaching. Oregon City lies at the base of Willamette Falls. It was one of the few known points in the Oregon Territory, as the destination for thousands coming overland to lay claim to the acres upon acres of forested land. Presently, Oregon City is known by its proximity to Portland. The two neighboring settlements were considered "long-distance," when on a spring evening in 1889, energy generated from the falls was carried through 14 miles of recently-laid copper wire to power streetlights in downtown Portland's Chapman Square.
