This thesis is a poetry manuscript that establishes its footing in multiple poetic traditions, particularly blank verse and free verse, in order to discuss general themes of separation, isolation, and alienation on both the personal and social fronts in an imaginative light that proves aesthetically pleasing and points the reader in the direction of solutions to these problems. While the poems of the first section generally speak to issues of both the struggle to tame language to one’s own desires and to issues of personal alienation, the poems of later sections branch out more into the world in general and …

As a native to this region and a writer I have spent much of my life attempting to capture a unique aesthetic of what I see through my essays and poetry. The following thesis is a manuscript of nonfiction essays with a critical introduction and conclusion that work together to provide a cohesive narrative centered in the Appalachian region. Through place specific imagery and implementation of regional dialect, and a narrative lens, my collection reveals an aesthetic of the rapidly expanding genre of Appalachian Literature. Excerpt: "In many ways, Sarah Klassen's novel, The Wittenbergs, turns on the question of family history and just how heavy a burden one family's past can weigh upon its current generations. For the Wittenbergs, the family at the center of Klassen's text, this sometimes unacknowledged weight carries with it certain consequences. Only a reformation of sorts can set the family free to understand their history in new, more hopeful, ways."
