This project looks at the lives of three women from antiquity, Livia, Tanaquil, and Alexandra, and determines what can and cannot be known about them. Livia, Tanaquil, and Alexandra were all powerful women during their time, but today, the stories of their lives are confusing and contradictory. Through the medium of fiction, this project brings Livia, Tanaquil, and Alexandra to life as characters in a story in order to highlight the problems that arise when studying these women. This collection of poetry uses the perspectives of sidekicks and villains to create different stories and to provide a deeper connection with these often overlooked characters. The narrators of these poems are Maleficent the evil queen in Sleeping Beauty, Grumpy one of the seven dwarfs, Falada the horse of the Goose Girl, and the fairy godmother from Cinderella who becomes the evil queen from Snow White. It follows the story of a twenty-two year old artist named Sandy and her older brother, John, who want to paint a city mural as a memorial for their uncle. The primary theme revolves around the idea of finding beauty in tension. This theme is developed as Sandy, an idealist, is forced to deal with difficult situations that will ultimately change the way she approaches life and art.

The Jungle Down the Street, the Town Across the Bridge, All is Very Well is a series of short, nonfiction essays attempting to paint several portraits—regional, ecological, familial, and personal. Focused around the town of Apalachicola, Florida, it addresses themes of family, folklore, tragedy, and the “New Sublime,” or the feeling of wonder at the beauty that precedes an inevitable end. The piece attempts to blend multiple narrative and thematic arcs through the use of humor, anecdote, and historical research.
