As teachers, writers, activists, and members of the progressive retirement community Pilgrim Place, they’ve had a significant influence on the global environmental movement. The photographs and small essays in this project highlight who they are and what they’ve done, and how they continue to shape contemporary intellectual discourse. Lowrider is a collection of interlinking short stories, adding up to a novelistic whole, which follows man in his late-20s, who is left paralyzed after a motorcycle accident. Set primarily in a Virginia Beach nursing home, but also in various locales around that city, the protagonist, nicknamed Youngblood by the members of his wheelchair gang, attempts to rehabilitate himself while confronted with the realities of age and isolation. Several themes are explored, including identity, love, permanence and transience, physical and emotional paralysis, and, ultimately, self-acceptance. wordriver is a literary journal dedicated to the poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction of adjunct, part-time and fulltime instructors teaching under a semester or yearly contract in our universities, colleges, and community colleges worldwide. Graduate student teachers who have used up their teaching assistant time and are teaching with adjunct contracts for the remainder of their graduate program are also eligible.

We’re looking for work that demonstrates the creativity and craft of adjunct/part-time instructors in English and other disciplines. We reserve first publication rights and onetime anthology publication rights for all work published. We do not accept simultaneous submissions.

Hush explores the rural Pennsylvania landscape in seven short stories that strive to slice the characters open and take a brief, brutal look inside. Teenagers lounge on rocks and rattlesnakes twist in cages. Rivers freeze and houses speak. A hunter loses his family and a basketball star loses his shot. And a young girl learns about sex amidst a minefield of guilt and abuse. Story to story, the characters harbor secrets and shame as they search for forgiveness, for redemption, and for some precious measure of grace.

This collection of stories delves into themes of the working class. These stories of working-class characters range from realism to fabulism to experimental, because the story of working-class people is complex and always shifting. Some of the stories travel backward in time to shepherds and traveling crusaders, while others take on much more contemporary voices, speaking from the point of view of sex workers, carpenters, office workers, ice cream van drivers, and salesmen. Alayna "Laney" Moreland is living in an emotional and abusive household. Her mother, Janelle, is an alcoholic. Laney grew up at a young age taking care of her. Janelle's boyfriend, Nick, is physically and verbally abusive towards Laney. Janelle tries to prevent it, but can't. Janelle eventually loses the battle with depression and commits suicide. Laney is placed in foster care after child protective services realizes what Nick is doing to her. Laney eventually learns how to cope with her mother's death and deal with her past.

A screenplay. The story addresses the question whether or not a person should forgive someone who as caused them great heartache. The main character, Michael Phillips, loves his wife Kiera, but believes she is having an affair with his brother Tony. His jealousy consumes him and he abandons his wife and child. The story resumes several years later, after the death of Michael's father. As the story unfolds, Michael seeks to find the friend who betrayed him, make peace with his brother, and convince his wife to love him again.

This thesis is composed of five short stories held together with an overarching meta-narrative. Each individual story and the framework narrative deal with the themes of psychological abnormalities and the supernatural. A variety of techniques are used, including first, second, and third person point of views, epistolary formatting, metaphysical storylines, and various dialects.

This paper’s research question concerns how the ecological creativity of the Volcanic Plains region of Western Victoria may be transformed into an ecology of well-being of benefit to the local community. Drawing on the philosophies of Spinoza and Gilles Deleuze, we argue that community well-being results from the richness of connections and relationships made within a place. The case study for our investigation is ‘Flows & Catchments’, which is an ongoing, collaborative, creative-arts research project auspiced by Deakin University. In my current PhD study, Creative River Journeys, I use the metaphor of the river as a data capture tool when interviewing artist-researchers about their experiences of conducting creative practice within a university context. My use of the river functions as a metaphor for the creative process. I have adapted the River Journey tool from its previous use as a map of teacher identity and professional development, and in a project about children’s musical experience. This collection of short stories takes its name from various islands historically believed to exist and at one time or other located on maps, sometimes remaining on them for centuries, but later removed after they were proved to be illusory. Old New Hampshire Highway Number Four was incorporated by an act of the New Hampshire legislature in the autumn of 1800. It wound out of Portsmouth, a seaport that once rivaled Boston, drove west through Concord, north past Penacook, through Boscawen, Salisbury, Andover, and Wilmot on its way to Lebanon and the Connecticut River. These names string history like beads. The Penacook tribe assembled each year on the banks of the Merrimack at the site of the present town that bears their name. This thesis examines a local Little Rock community, anchored by its 99-year-old matriarch, Mary Stafford. Mary lives on her, and her lifestyle is dependent on a network of neighbors that help care and provide for her daily needs. This network exists because Mary has touched the lives of those around her so deeply, that now in her senior years, she has enough assistance to maintain an independent lifestyle in her home. With strong themes of sacrifice and motherhood, told through the narrator's own life experiences combined with Mary's, this project explores how a community impacts the lives of its members. …

My honors senior thesis, a creative project entitled Separate Spaces, is a collection of fourteen poems that reflects on trauma, loss, interpersonal relationships, and nature. Many of the poems are dramatic monologues, which means that they are written in a voice that is distinctly not my own. This allows me to portray a range of extreme voices, including a survivor of the bombing of Hiroshima, a U.S. veteran of the Iraq War, and murderer Perry Smith.
