Self-efficacy plays a major role in the way we perceive our abilities to complete challenging tasks and goals. With Albert Bandura’s theories of self-efficacy as its theoretical foundation, this thesis explores the ways Bandura’s theories apply to writing instruction and how specific cultural forces help shape the way students view their identities as writers. This study gives a focused and detailed explanation of the role writing self-efficacy occupies in education and composition theory, as well as the factors affecting a person’s perceived writing efficacy. The Wanderers and Other Stories is a collection of short stories that explores themes of travel and isolation within interior and exterior spaces. The object of this collection is to define the point of disruption between persona and the “other” self and to evaluate the limitations of communication and language. Many of these stories reflect on the literal and metaphorical distance between people and attempt to hone in on the point of contact—and often rupture—that characterizes the fraught nature of human relationships. The collection is accompanied by a critical introduction.

This thesis documents the concept, process, installation, and specific pieces in my Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, Marais des Cygnes. The Marais des Cygnes is a river in southeast Kansas and western Missouri, near a Bleeding Kansas-era massacre site of the same name. The river is notorious for flash flooding, was named by French explorers and translates to Marsh of the Swans. The work is about a fictional wandering car thief and alcoholic named Vernon, the bad guy in my novel. Time and Fortune, a graphic novel script, takes the true story of John Harrison’s competition for the longitude prize, as told by Dava Sobel, and seeks the changes that could have culminated had Harrison sought other avenues for his product. Considering his judge was his competitor, if Harrison made a secret copy of H-4, a watch that accurately holds the time from homeport, and gave it to a sailor invested in its success, naval military power could have changed today’s world as we know it. This is a collection of four short stories and three essays with a critical introduction. The people in these stories, both fiction and non-fiction, are all on the fringes of society. They are experiencing financial ruin, emotional turmoil, sickness, mental instability and other struggles. This material is an examination of their lives and the alternately humorous and tragic attempts of coping with their circumstances.
