This thesis comprises a novel, ‘Lilac Tractors’ and an essay, ‘Intersections among psychiatry, madness, sexuality and feminism in ‘Lilac Tractors’’. The novel focuses on the relationship of a married couple, Gary, a fly-in, fly-out rig worker, and Sharon, a mature-age university student studying psychology. They live together in Perth’s north at the turn of the twenty-first century, as the outer suburbs are beginning to sprawl. Gary has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Sharon finds that her growing knowledge of the condition increases her annoyance with him, rather than her compassion. Miguel, a peasant, journeys to Pueblo Santa Cruz for food, redemption, and a couple of cervezas at the Cantina de los Remedios. While at the Cantina, he becomes fascinated by an old guitar, La llorona, hanging upon the wall. The Cantina's owner, Pedrito, tells him of its origins, and the man who played it -- Rodrigo, perhaps the greatest singer-songwriter to have hailed from Pueblo Santa Cruz, but who mysteriously disappeared following a fateful love affair, leaving La llorona behind.

This thesis investigates Welty's four short story collections and treats the stories as separate entities that are intimately connected to each other by a theme that evolves over and yet transcends the forty odd years that seem to separate them--namely Welty's theme of male homosexual desire. I will examine Welty's story collections using a theoretical framework that incorporates a history of homosexuality in the South and investigates such themes as travel, identity, reactions to heterosexual coupling, and traces Welty's own experiences through the experiences of her fictional male characters.
