The Oval, 2010

The Oval

College has its own culture, jargon, and rituals much like a country. We only live in this country for four years, but when we want to revisit, we do not have yearbooks, nor can we keep every weekly Kaimin newspaper. The Oval, a literary magazine with stories, visual art, and poetry captures themes, emotions, and memories experienced at college that a record-book cannot. In the third edition of The Oval, we hear a variety of voices speaking of unique experiences, but they all come from the same country—they’re University of Montana undergraduates.

Shelter tells the story of the writer's nine months spent volunteering at a home for young men in Cape Town, South Africa. It focuses on the themes of manhood and masculinity, dignity as a found concept, self-realization through travel, modern colonialism and the first world/third world relationship, and the meaning of volunteering, for both the individual and those being "helped."

Set over the course of a seven-day trip to the United Kingdom, Flowers of Purgatory explores how Beatrix Tompkins, a high school principal from small town Oregon, seeks closure to her decades of mourning the loss of her English fiancé. While she tries to maintain control over her young co-sponsor and the five students, Beatrix must come to terms with the reality of her emotional, psychological, and spiritual poverty. Though hardened by her life's circumstances, Beatrix receives undeserved grace. Flowers of Purgatory contemplates the nature of redemption, the burdens we bear, and the cost of letting them go.

The stories in this collection concern the suburban demography as an American landscape, as unique as Manhattan or the West Coast or the Mississippi River or the Arizona desert, with its own lore, mythos, and expectations. These stories attempt to retell those myths and ask why expectations fall short, when they do.

These stories are similar in their exposition and context: male viewpoint characters who live in middle class neighborhoods and communities and spend their days battling anxiety and paranoia and fear and mystery and confusion. In this essay, I wish to pursue an – admittedly all too brief – inspection of the weblog as a form of autobiographical discourse. In essence, I want to ask the question, "How does the blog as a medium shape a particular kind of self-representation?" To accomplish this, I will first provide a working definition of the autobiographical blog. Next, I will examine two elements that I believe are key to the blog as a form of discourse; that is, the blog’s temporal logic and its unique author-reader relationship. This thesis includes a collection of poems and a foreword discussing individual poems, the relationship of the poems as a collection, important themes, and concerns of craft. These poems comprise a narrative of place developed chronologically and are grounded in the context of regional storytelling and oral histories specific to Southwestern Virginia during roughly the first two thirds of the Twentieth Century.

The Way of Sinners is a collection of short stories united by place and themes. The stories, most of which are told in first-person, take place in fictional and real towns around Virginia, in Tidewater, the Shenandoah Valley and the western part of the commonwealth, near Blacksburg. The stories concern women and girls who feel they have failed, who fear they cannot be redeemed. The characters want to be restored to dignity — to be whole again, good. From the seat of a bicycle, behind the stage of a lumberjack competition, atop a boatful of oyster shells, and from other unusual perspectives the nonfiction stories in this collection explore a variety of subjects. In some cases I position myself as an outsider, learning through research, interviews and observation. In others I begin as an outsider and then dive in personally, making myself the subject of the experiment.
