This collection of poems is a collage of my experiences and observations. Some of the poems emerge from an attempt to make sense of contemporary events or the day-to-day minutia of my daily life in twenty-first century America.

The collection is divided thematically into three sections. The first has to do with the past and its impact on the future. The second has to do with the sensual and the romantic (for lack of a better term). The third section is concerned with the impact of socio-political issues on the individual. Abstract Nakajima Atsushi (1909-1942) is an erudite writer who has combined Eastern and Western thoughts in his short stories. This thesis focuses on the influences of Romanticism and Taoism on his writings. Nakajima is skeptical of civilization and yearns for a natural and simple existence. The concepts central to Nakajima's works as articulated by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Lao Tzu are introduced in chapter l. Chapter 2 examines Nakajima's upbringing and the influences of his family, education, and work on him, as well as his thoughts revealed in his autobiographical fiction. Sexual assault is widespread throughout America; unfortunately, because this crime breeds shame in its victims, most sexual assault victims never tell anyone. But, as Confessional writing became popularized in contemporary society and more victims felt the need and space to speak out, the rape autobiography developed as an essential tool in understanding the epidemic of sexual violence and the ways in which victims internalize their experiences.

Sisyphus Uphill is a collection of poems inspired by the mythic struggle of one man who angered the gods by trying to be too much like them. Sisyphus was cursed to roll a heavy boulder up a mountaintop and then watch it tumble back down to the bottom for all eternity. The pitfalls of hubris and the seeming pointlessness of our daily attempts to get ahead both in the rat race and in personal relationships may not contain the high drama of myth, but this material is rife with hidden comedy and tragedy. The Stories We Tell The Stars is a collection of interconnected short stories united by character, place and theme. The stories radiate from Argos Island, a fictional Chesapeake island, and follow the characters of David, Roy, Josephine and Brianna. Thematically, the stories are concerned with the question of how to reconcile the existential conditions of separation, exile and meaninglessness. They also explore man' relationship with place, both in how place shapes us and in the longing to return to, or to escape from, home. Finally, the stories explore the ways myths and mythmaking create meaning and purpose in our lives.
