Interpreting Nature In Australia Through Poetry: A Personal Anthology Written Within The Erosion Caldera Of Northern New South, Kyla Allon
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
My Independent Study Project (ISP) involved traveling within the erosion caldera of northern New South Wales, mainly WWOOFing (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) and writing environmental poetry about the places where I lived and worked. I began by researching past Australian environmental poets so that I could have a strong basic understanding before commencing my own writing. I lived in four different locations within the erosion caldera and strove to form a strong sense of place that is reflected in my poetry. Ultimately, I produced an anthology of poems that capture my responses to the natural environments that I experienced. …

There is the birthplace and there is the deathplace. We are in the deathplace. The deathplace is Bad Aibling, in southern Germany, just north of the Austrian border. To get here, we have driven through the Tyrol, the Italian-Austrian-German alpine region in which gingerbread houses stack up on the green slopes of valleys.
Bad Aibling sounds fitting for a deathplace, a bad place, though in fact “bad” means “bath.” As we drive on a two-lane road, we see cars parked in bunches on the grassy shoulder, and it seems people might be bathing, dipping their feet in the country creeks …

This collection of poems explores the anticipated reality against that which is real in my world. These poems defy the normal explanations of life in order to explore what it means to be a woman—more specifically a black woman who was raised in a single parent home. I took on the characteristics of my mother, whether I desired to or not; I took in her salt and seasoned myself with her sweet sometimes, sour flavor. These poems not only deal with my own perceptions of myself but also those that others have of me. I struggle with my true nationality, …

This novel explores mourning and responsibility versus the desire for family and intimacy. The story is told from the first-person viewpoint of Winnie Mackey, an adolescent boy who loses his father to complications from diabetes, and who experiments with love in Jerome County, Kentucky.
Winnie's anger and depression following his father's death are complicated by his budding relationship with Faye Linnet, his best friend's twin sister. This situation, especially as it is told from a young narrator's perspective, illustrates how adolescents deal with adult emotions. When life experiences yield inadequate coping mechanisms, these young people embody their pain and pleasure. …

Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his essay Self-Reliance, defined complacency as the ultimate satisfaction of the self despite everything. It is to “rise above time’s rule” and “shun the battles of fate.” It is these battles of fate in the course of time’s rule that essentially predetermine how individuals work out their destinies by limiting or overriding human will. In following Emerson’s philosophy, I believe that we possess innate qualities that give us the potential to overcome such destiny. This is a collection of five short stories. Each story presents a character who needs to grow up. That makes five wayward children. In the opening story, a young man learns from a Foreign Exchange student that he must accept his role as a child in order to grow up. The next story presents an old Italian-American matron who has lost her beloved five-foot plaster saint. "In Cowboy America" is just as much a coming-of-age memoir about a young writer as it is about the Filipino-American experience. In 16 chapters I recall memories of family members—Grandmother, aunts, uncles and parents—as well as memories of my own. The stories capture events from my childhood years to marriage. The text also encapsulates family events of the past, before I was even born, and brings them to the forefront to show how they have shaped who I am today: a writer who has chosen a career most Asians, and Asian-Americans in general, have decided not to pursue.
