A Bare Unpainted Table: A Manuscript Of Poems, Gladys Cardiff

The poems in this collection reflect Cardiff's bi-cultural Native American and Euro-American inheritance. The book title comes from a sixteenth century chronicle in which the native peoples of the Americas are seen as "simple gentiles" living under the "lawe of nature " . These narrative poems refute the Eurocentric notion that American Indians can be likened to a "bare table" or "a blank sheet of paper to be written upon ". The poem s celebrate her Indian heritage and also engage allusively with Western and Asian tradition s and conventions. Sometimes edgy, sometimes honorific, the juxtaposition of traditions in these …

SETTING: Cordoba, Spain, 1135 CE, 29th year of the reign of ‘Ali “amir al-muslimin,” second king of the Berber Almoravid dynasty, rulers of Moorish Spain from 1071 to 1147. Cordoba, the capital of Andalus and the center of the Almoravid holdings in Spain, is a bustling cosmopolitan center, a crossroads for Europe and the Middle East, and the meeting-point of three religious traditions. Most significantly, Cordoba at this time is the hub of European intellectual activity. This novel is set in the fictional town of Snug Harbor, Alaska - a small south-coastal fishing village. The beauty and ruggedness of the natural environment constantly inform the movements of the purse seining fleet, the local businesses, and, especially, the people. The characters' connections and experiences with the land and sea scapes are integral to how they perceive their internal worlds. As the seasons progress quickly from the opening chapter of the spring equinox, the arrival of light augments the townspeople's activities.
