In this manuscript of poems, I seek to address the seeming polarities of sacrifice and excess with respect to the sacred and to show that not only may they co-exist, but that they may actually be viewed as one and the same. With respect to the idea of chaff, the central uniting metaphor of the manuscript, the point I'm working toward is that there actually is no chaff unless everything is chaff--that, in terms of both the inner and outer life, asceticism may have its place, but it should not be looked upon as ''higher" than abundance. This fictional novella takes place during the narrator Smoot's two-year mission to Melbourne, Australia. It chronicles the intertwining of the lives and destinies of three main characters: Smoot, a Utah native who struggles with carnality and lack of conversion and spirituality; Babakian, an Australian convert who used to be a punk rocker and has become frustrated with Mormonism's blandness and conformity; and Samantha, a nonmember part-Tongan Utahn with whom Smoot was involved before his mission. Speaking generally, the novella is about how Babakian misuses his creative powers of art and sexuality, how Samantha explores the gospel and changes her life, …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

VICTORIA WODZAK elegantly limns the distance, interaction, and tension between warriors and weavers, the heroic code and the domestic code, in classical epics, notably those of Homer and Beowulf. Wodzak is a Ph.D. candidate in the English program of the University of Missouri-Columbia, teaches composition for that Department, and not least is the mother of seven children, ages one to sixteen, to whom she attributes at least part of the inspiration for her essay. There is a propelling space, a locus obscured and inexplicable, and it is not the Libido—it's beyond the body. Termed as the sacred, but also termed as the Real, the Absolute, or the un-Ground, this space ushers writing by way of its reading, and this space already consumes us. The Land works at mapping approaches to this inexplicable, extranatural, religious space.

The seven stories in this collection deal with the wonders and horrors of love, especially within families. The narrators include teenagers, a working mother; a middle-aged divorcee, a young woman with a secret past; a disillusioned husband, and a grieving mother. Change — love, death, and what comes in between — puts them at odds with themselves and the world. As they encounter the alienation and destruction that come in life, they struggle with their own limitations and those of others.

Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms.
