Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.

Why The "Promethean"?

At the start of the semester, I asked some people on campus what they knew about The Promethean. The answers were humbling, ranging from "The what?" to "Is that the newspaper?" Forging fearlessly ahead, I then asked if anyone knew what "Promethean" might mean. Even the members of my staff seemed uncertain. It therefore occurred to me to explain what this word means and why it is an appropriate title for our campus literary magazine.

Webster's defines "Promethean" as 1. of or suggestive of Prometheus; 2. creative; boldly original.

I wrote a full-length comedy/drama for the stage. My purpose in writing this play was to show how people deal with life in their quest for freedom. The play is set in the present, the morning of Christmas Eve, in Norfolk, Virginia. The characters are mildly to extremely eccentric, and the major story line deals with a woman who traps her husband in his mall candy shop. Subplots include the mother waiting for her kidnapped Baby Jesus to return, finding a dead mouse, and freeing a caged mall zoo gorilla.

Concerning his film Satyricon, Federico Fellini once said that the pre-Christian world would be so alien to contemporary society that it would resemble a work of science fiction. I have tried to take a similar approach in relation to the division of mind and body which has been the basis of western culture since Descartes. In this novel, I have attempted to present a world without such a division, a world where thoughts are used to power generators, where bodies possess the memory of their own suffering and where souls are capable of being stored and eaten. SONYA YVETTE ALVARADO shows the similarities between Owen Wister's Em'ly and Dolly, a hen and a schoolmarm characterized as unnatural for their independence and rejection of motherhood, and the women in Ken's Kesey's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, a collection of castrating wives and nurses. Author of an article on David Mamet's "Glengarry Glenn Ross," Alvarado is currently a doctoral student in the Department of English at Texas Tech University, where she teaches Studies in Dramatic Literature, and is researching the use of computers and the Internet as tools in teaching literature.
