If I have done my job, the problems which are outlined in this book of poems will resist the type of abstraction required in this space. After all, the first problem any poet must engage is how to navigate the necessary fluctuations between abstract statements and concrete images. For this book, there are two conflicting desires which are always in flux: the desire for a world of things and the desire for a world of ideas. This collection of poems primarily features play of language, image, and voice. A postmodern juxtaposition of ancient figures and contemporary ideas, as well as a blurring of the line between autobiography and fiction, revises familiar stories. My goal is to seek what is surprising, daring-a strength of voice combining with a sometimes casual tone which hints towards deeper circumstances. Most specifically, my work exists within a fictional landscape which allows the creation of "a safe space." The gesture of the poem stops everything, commentates on what is suspended and the suspension itself.

Taking Up Slack, a collection of twenty-seven poems, is arranged in three sections, drawing from varying formal and social contexts. The idea at work here is that poetry must establish space for itself at the level of form and at the level of its subject matter: that poetry creates a community, and in doing so establishes parameters, but, in doing so, also establishes sufficient discursive space for reconfiguring those parameters. Herein is a collection of poems each having something to do with how and/or why we figure our bodies in relation to the Space we tend to call the World, History, or Family. The first section, entitled "Settlement," deals primarily with the idea of orienting ourselves in terms of family in its loosest sense. The second section, "Generation," questions the relation of space and family in terms of the Bible's Old Testament. Word Into Idea: The Four-Column Association And The Placket, Stephen W. Fried

Two aleatory exercises in experimental poetry and prose for face-to-face classrooms are described step-by-step, In the first, a round-robin of word associations provides a lexicon from which first a poem and then a prose piece are generated and optionally shared. In the second, participants compile lists of rhyming words that are transferred to templates that position the rhyming words among blanks to be filled in. The sequence generates first a four-line poem from two triple rhymes, then a six-line poem from three triple rhymes and finally a ten-line poem from five quintuple rhymes. Results are shared on a voluntary basis.
