Résumé, Fred G. Leebron Oct 1993

Résumé, Fred G. Leebron

English Faculty Publications

I sat at the back of a pale classroom and watched my father teach. "Creative Inspiration," my father lectured, "is what you have as soon as you are born and the doctor slaps you on your bottom. That first cry, because you're hungry or tired or just glad to be breathing, is your first creative inspiration." I leaned back in my chair to ease the heat rising in my face. "Incidentally," my father said, grinning at the under graduates, "I've read the Sexual Harassment pamphlet, and I want you all to know I don't slap bottoms." [excerpt]

The Falcon: A Play, Harold W. Mckinney Ii Oct 1993

The Falcon: A Play, Harold W. Mckinney Ii

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The Falcon is a historical drama set in medieval France during the reign of Philip the Fair, a tumultuous period of history marked by the fall of the Holy Land to Islam after more than 200 years of struggle by Christian forces to reclaim it, and followed by the gradual exile of the Popes from Rome to Avignon on the outskirts of France.

The play itself focuses on King Philip's repeated clashes with the Papacy, as well as his ruthless attack on the Order of the Knights Templar, whose own fate was interwoven with the fortunes of both Crown and …

Dok: An Original Screenplay, Duncan Campbell

Institute for the Humanities Theses

DOK is an original screenplay in which DOK blames his brother, Jim, for the death of his wife and son. Jim accepts that blame. Jim, a reporter, is there to cover DOK's arrest by Special Agent Bill Withers. Jim is unaware that DOK, real name Daniel, is his brother. In quick succession: DOK is released from jail, Withers runs a drunken Jim off the road, and DOK finds and treats Jim. Jim, while …

The Promethean, Volume 02, Number 01, Fall 1993, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

After just finishing this issue of The Promethean, the same nagging feeling reduces me to simple frustration: I know that there are potential witers out there who have thought about contributing but have not. It is not only that I value each piece submitted, but it is because I know that people are moved by and enjoy reading the works of others.

For instance, I'm willing to believe that Amy Westlund's "Homecoming" will stir the thoughts of those who have been lucky enough to travel and rouse a sense of curiousity in those who have not. Hidden meanings and not …

Katharine's Dream, Karen Maceira Jul 1993

Katharine's Dream, Karen Maceira

English Theses & Dissertations

Katharine's Dream is about a girl born into a family of great passion and great fear. Not all members of the family survive this devastating combination. These poems tell of who survived and how, and of who did not.

The poems are predominantly free verse lyrics which use standard diction and syntax. More often than not, they employ a short line, dense imagery and "white space," which frames the images and ideas, in the words of Mary Oliver, with the necessary "silence." Though the rhythms of some of the poems flow among smoothly, line breaks in others often suggest the …

The Promethean

When given a full page on which to write freely, one should should always pick up a pen and begin, and I, luckily, have been given this page. Only the reader can decide if what I have written is thoughtful and important.

This is the third issue of a journal which has yet to realize its full potential. Improvements have been made, and they will always be necessary as we strive for (near) perfection.

To realize this goal, everyone must contribute; submissions must be made (from both on and off campus); support must be offered. When this is done, the …
