Philip Booth teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Syracuse University each spring but spends as much of the year as possible at his home in Maine. He is a frequent contributor of poetry to such magazines as The New Yorker and Harper's and is the author of several books. In 1980 he received a Fellowship in Writing from the National Endowment for the Arts. Most of the poems in Before Sleep were composed in the 130-year-old family house where the author's grandparents lived, and where his grandson represents a fifth generation.

Kent Nussey received his M.A. in Creative Writing in 1981 from Syracuse University, where he is now a part-time instructor in the English Department. His fiction tends to reflect a concern for the wedding of popular culture to the old rooted American obsessions with religion and money. "Listening" is from an unpublished collection of the same name. He is currently at work on a novel. Mr. Nussey is one of the nation's four recipients of the 1983 Wallace Stegner Fellowship for fiction. The award is given by Stanford University, where he will teach a graduate workshop in fiction writing next …
