This paper aims to scrutinize various aspects in which Aimé Césaire is represented in the Caribbean novel as a personage, on the basis of Théorie et fiction by Milagros Ezquerro. We discover that, because of the great halo and notoriety of the eminent cultural and political figure that he was, Aimé Césaire has been put on stage by several Caribbean novelists. So Césaire has become a literary material, as well as a theme with various patterns.

Poetry is often understood as a series of deviations from linguistic norms, but Mohamed Hmoudane’s collections appear to be a systematic subversive strategy against both aesthetic conventions and prevailing assumptions about Eastern and Western identitarian categories. Published between 2003 and 2005, the works entitled Attentat, incandescence and Blanche mécanique avert poetic clichés as they invert cultural stereotypes, taking a most satirical stance toward the state of the world at the dawn of a new millenium. The words novel, drama and poetry can be translated because they refer to well-known specific concepts. Words referring to endogenous or indigenous forms and norms with cultural codes unknown to us cannot be translated. The translation of these words does not provide much information about them. The word koteba in bambara, a language spoken in Mali, means “a big snail”. The word hainteny (science of speech in Malagasy) refers to a specific type of popular oral poetry. La Poétique De L’Espace Ceint. Le Topos Insulaire Dans Soupir D’Ananda Devi, Antje Ziethen

This article proposes an analysis of the island topos in Sigh by the Mauritian writer Ananda Devi. The island transcends its physical boundaries and becomes the medium of a literary discourse on slavery and its consequences in the region of the Indian Ocean. Beyond its geography, the island is transformed into a social space, a historical monument, a psychological state and a poetic writing of space. The island and the text merge into an organic novelistic fabric that we call "textile."

Uusing endogenous aesthetic norms as critical tool, we do not purport to evaluate the avatars of the French language outside of the Hexagon. instead, we locate the languages of the “periphery,” and particularly the Aja-Fon language of Benin, at the center of our inquiry to examine the means by which those languages move away from a text initially constructed on the basis of Western endogenous norms. Féminitude Et Négritude : Discours De Genre Et Discours Culturel Dans L’Oeuvre De Calixthe Beyala, Christina Angelfors

This article examines how Calixthe Beyala, by using two key concepts, féminitude and négritude, engages in a dialogue with different European or Occidental feminist movements on the one side and the myths and traditions of the African continent on the other side. She addresses, one could say, Simone de Beauvoir’s question, “What is a women?”, as well as the question asked by the négritude writers, “What is a negro?”. The analysis of the opposition between the universal and the particular will show the complexity of the question of identity in Calixthe Beyala’s work.

The aim of this paper is to analyze, through the example of the feminist positions proposed by Calixthe Beyala in the novels she wrote between 1987 and 2007, the change of the novelist’s ideological and artistic perspective. It emphasizes the progressive loss of critical voice to the advantage of a new voice wishing to understand itself as individuality in its world. This study reveals the novelist’s contribution to the construction of a new position of the individual in the context of French social and cultural life.

This article shows how Beyala questions the traditional status of the male figure by the emphasis of an emasculate male type. This last one does not illustrate the feminists ideals attributed to the author. He is rather placed in the center of humanists questions relegated into the background by his counterparts for the profit of their “androcentriques” concerns. Beyala so creates a man symbolically close to the androgyne who reveals her inhalation to a world managed in a egalitarian way by the man and the woman because of the human nature of the stakes to be defended.

Beyala has remained faithful to the publisher Albin Michel for her fictional work since the publication of Le petit prince de Belleville in 1992, but her four fi rst novels had three different publishers. A study of her relationship with the publishing world during this period shows her desire for recognition on the Parisian literary scene, which was ready to take up the challenge by publishing the novel of an unknown African woman writer. Immigration and otherness represent core concerns in contemporary society and, as such, give rise to debate and discussion in many disciplines. the question of otherness also arises as a recurrent and key subject in the field of literature. Tahar Ben Jelloun’s novel Partir is replete with the ambivalence of otherness: attraction/aversion; difference/similarity; lack/exile; native/foreigner; close/distant; normal/deviant and as such provides a laboratory where the expression of otherness in discourse can be dissected. We will examine the perception and the issue of otherness in the novel as well as the strength of its representations.

Cung Giu Nguyên is known as one of the most important francophone writers in Vietnam, especially with novels such as Le fils de la baleine, Le domaine maudit and Le boujoum. Each of these works hides behind the mythical world of writing the author’s meditations on the hectic, chaotic and absurd realities. Le domaine maudit is the result of these reflections. It deals mainly with misfortune suffered by the individual, family and society. The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct the enunciation of the narrative.

For a long time, African novelists claimed filiation with realism. But there is in realism a deep contradiction between the will of describing the social world and the will of changing it. From this contradiction, the paper studies : the relation between theatre and novel ; the question of citizenship in the novel ; the place of the novel in front of knowledge and action. This article addresses the terms of commitment in Vous n’êtes pas seul by Gérard Étienne. For one part, the representation of the poet-and-tramp pertains to a first type of ideological commitment. For the second part, the study of oxymorons and references to Baudelaire will lead to a definition of another commitment of poetry in the novel as a counter-discourse for the victims of social exclusion.

Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Ahmadou Kourouma, Emmanuel Dongala and Ken Saro-Wiwa made speeches of street, stigmatized like a “language with hooligan” (Quefellec, 2006), a model, at least an agent of the aesthetics of the language of writing of their romantic fictions on the wars. The occurrence of “French of street” whose vulgarity and indocility narratively build the “mythèmes” violence, hatred and horror, reveals the transgression of the linguistic standard, without deteriorating the significant intentionality of works.

In the works of Patrick Chamoiseau, the act of writing is a main, recurrent theme. The narrator, often, tries to define himself through his writings which have their own autonomy in the novel. This character questions his writing and is torn by the dissatisfaction he feels to get close to the “breath” of the creole storyteller : the chasm between orality and writing creates suffering. He, then, advocates l’“écrire”, closer, according to him, to the utterance of the storyteller and free of the “constraints” of an occidental writing, which he considers as stamped by the ideology of the Universal.

This article is linked according to moods of functioning of a few narrative elements resulting from the detective novel, genre which obeys a historically authentic composition. When the narration of inquiry follows usually linearity in the facts scheme of arrangement, Chamoiseau, Confiant and Chalumeau get down to this work without renouncing to creole pictures, thanks to parallel stories which show cultural intertextuality. We so analyze the way of carrying out the police investigations and their generic limits in three novels of these authors who demonstrate, with specific differences, how to adapt the police type in the context of creolity.

My essay analyzes Karima Berger’s first novel, L’enfant des deux mondes (1989). The author who has been living in France for more than 25 years tells the story of a Muslim Arab girl (herself ?) educated in the French school system of pre-independent Algeria. In this study, I examine linguistic, cultural and religious issues raised by the novel in an effort to identify the factors that keep the protagonist imprisoned in a permanent state of being in-between-two-worlds without fully belonging to any of them.

The criticism has rarely studied the Caribbean sentimental novel. This article examines some of the terms of the writing of love among some writers of the Caribbean (Thérèse Herpin, Irmine Romanette, Marie Berté, Simone Schwarz-Bart, Gisèle Pineau, Marie Chauvet, Marie-Célie Agnant, Kettly Mars, etc.) in order to identify significant configurations. Indeed, while novelists incorporate several characteristics of the canonical sentimental novel, we can also detect in these texts miscegenation semiotics which link them both to the sentimental novel as a genre, to the realistic classic novel, and to the conventions of exotic literature and tales. Being rational and Cartesian, the detective novel is often bound by powerful constraints which seem not very compatible with the supernatural and the fantastic often defining West Indian writing. Through the analysis of Martinican Patrick Chamoiseau’s Solibo Magnifique (1988) and Haitian Gary Victor’s Les cloches de la Brésilienne (2006), we will nevertheless see how well they work together, the irrational taking hold of the detective novel, leading paradoxically to the progressive elimination of Cartesian practices and challenging an exclusively rational portrayal of the world.
