In this poem, the speaker is talking to his dog about a tune whose notes bent life into the perpetual question - a grasping, a condemnation, where the cure was part Coltrane, part Miles, and part love.

Dancing Fire, Helena Alfajora Jan 2016

Dancing Fire, Helena Alfajora

Canterbury Scholars

My creative process is like the Hero’s Journey. Wrought with “the call to action,” I felt a call from these pieces to bring them into our material world—the ideas, the moods, the colors wanting to translate from my mind through my hand and now, into this room. Through all the musings of our daily lives, these pieces came to be through different mediums with different mentors and different mindsets. The one constant throughout was my content, my inspiration, my grounding—the Hawaiian goddess, Pele.

Her form takes place in art, dance, written words, life, nature, my family, those around me. In …

Haiku's Reception And Practice In Contemporary North American Poetry, Ayako Takahashi, Judy Halebsky

English and Creative Writing | Faculty Scholarship

In the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the Meiji government implemented a wealth and military strength policy. This policy invited employed foreigners from western countries to Japan in order to modernize the nation by importing western laws, technologies and systems. Through these employed foreigners, Japanese literacy and literature were abruptly introduced into western countries. The term haiku, it has been used since Shiki Masaoka. Before him, the words of haikai and hokku were brought into use …

Migrant Child, Nicholas Sheperd Jan 2016

Migrant Child, Nicholas Sheperd

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Migrant Child is a poetry collection about injustice in the United States of America and the international community. The purpose of the collection is to humanize social injustice in the present, so as to show the reader that discrimination still happens in the United States in 2016. To that end, the collection draws on comparisons from civil rights movements of the 1960s and from present day. It is also meant to reflect injustices the author experiences in his own life. The poetry collection was created after the author spent six months volunteering throughout the State of Florida. The poems in …

A Poetic Response To Cancer: Scars, Mortality, And The Doctor-Patient Relationship, Jodi Andrews Jan 2016

A Poetic Response To Cancer: Scars, Mortality, And The Doctor-Patient Relationship, Jodi Andrews

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I enter the medical poetry conversation, specifically focusing on scars, mortality and the doctor-patient relationship. I argue that the body standards society sets for women complicate how women wear scars; people read scars as imperfections on the female form. Because scars are visible markers on the body, they speak for themselves; I, therefore, encourage poets to write their own truth on their scars, to (re)write their meaning. In the mortality chapter, I argue that the isolation of death and burial and the dominant belief in the finality of death increases modern fear of death. This makes patients …

Devising Performance & Queer Futurity, Brendan F. Leonard Jan 2016

Devising Performance & Queer Futurity, Brendan F. Leonard

Honors Theses

This project argues that devising performance is an inherently queer and utopian form. In response to recent political movements, such as Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter, which seek to stage dissatisfaction with the systems of late capitalism, I turn to devising performance as a site. Informed by the queer and performance theories of Jose Esteban Munoz, Lee Edelman, and Jill Dolan, I argue that devised theater allows us to process disillusionment, rehearse collectivity, and stage futurity. In conversation with Munoz, I define futurity as an imaginative site that considers what will follow what some scholars suggest will be …
