This creative thesis contains poems arranged in two thematic parts. The first section, "Seaward," explores the world of commercial fishermen who work aboard enormous 365 foot factory trawlers in the Bering Sea. The content and language of this section depicts an adventurous and harsh environment, while the form of the poems creates a sense of waves heaving a boat up and down. The second section, "Landfall," deals primarily with experiences on land, ranging from forested landscapes of North America to desert landscapes of Mexico, from expressions of love for a mother to lamenting the death of a father. The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
RICHARD WAKEFIELD explores two of Thomas Eakins's paintings and two of Robert Frost's poems to examine the impact of modern life and concludes that the principle characters all "hear the tick of the clock and feel the gaze of Emerson's all-conspiring society." Wakefield teaches American literature at Tacoma Community College and the University of Washington, Tacoma. His writings have appeared in numerous journals, including Robert Frost Review, American Literature, and South Carolina Review, and his poetry has appeared in a variety of venues.
