Crafting Fear: The Horror Film Trailer, Courtney Dreyer

My research project investigates horror film trailers in an effort to define the characteristics of this genre and discuss its ideological implications. Focusing on theatrical trailers for American wide-release horror films between 2013 and 2017, I closely viewed a sample of forty trailers to inform my investigation. Horror trailers create an intense emotional experience of both dread and fear, tending to follow a similar narrative structure and employ a common set of stylistic techniques to achieve this emotional intensity. The shared stylistic techniques include elements such as tight framing, innocent imagery, and genre misdirection. The repetition of these elements promotes …

The occasion for the writing of these poems was activism surrounding the controversial highway known as the Roe 8 extension in the areas of Cockburn and Fremantle in Western Australia. Planned in the 1950s, Roe 8 is contentious for a number of reasons, including extraordinary political deals over funding, undue process regarding environmental reporting, lack of a business case, inadequate noise and traffic modelling, erasure of Indigenous heritage sites, and clearing of the sensitive Beeliar wetlands and Coolbellup banksia woodlands which were designated a Threatened Ecological Community in 2016. As today’s youth blossom into adulthood, they will simultaneously be challenged to develop their sense of self/identity and to cultivate their ability to embrace differences, all while being bombarded by visual media and messaging. Research literature on perspective taking provides a framework by which students can develop an understanding of their own perspective, imagine the world from an “other” perspective, and make connections that link to productive actions (Selman, 1971). Perspective taking as a concept has been linked to greater empathy, compassion, and prosocial behavior (Hardwood and Farrar, 2006). This is a fictional podcast series that presents a story that is completed through roleplaying. The structure follows that of a video game, with the main characters, or "players," interacting with a set plot while deciding their own course of action. I act as the narrator for the story, controlling the plot and setting as well as non-player characters, or "NPCs." Comment un incident trivial – une dispute entre un Libanais chrétien et un ouvrier palestinien – peut-il devenir une affaire nationale à cause d’une simple insulte ? Le vrai sujet du film est le ressentiment que ressentent les chrétiens de Beyrouth-Est envers les Palestiniens, leurs anciens ennemis durant la guerre civile. La confrontation met en lumière l’évolution de la haine et l’impossibilité d’un pardon trente ans après la fin de la guerre. Le réalisateur fait ainsi preuve d’audace, traitant de front la question de l’amnésie/amnistie qui permit, de manière peut-être artificielle, la fin des combats.

The story of a blind Lebanese musician confronting an unforgiving bureaucracy and the traumas of a violent past – the Lebanese Civil War – Vatché Boulghourjian’s Tramontane (Rabih) explores questions of memory and the lingering ghosts of war through the struggles of a war orphan seeking to obtain a passport. The article examines the trials he endures in his quest to uncover his identity, along with decades-old family and political secrets, adopting a historical perspective that draws parallels between the protagonist’s journey and society’s broader struggle to confront a troubled chapter in the nation’s history.

Meyerhold, dubbed “the people’s artist” by the Soviet regime, led a tumultuous artistic life and carried out provocative experiments in unconventional theatre settings. After cofounding the Moscow Art Theatre with renowned colleagues such as Stanislavski and Danchenko, he left the company to regain his independence as an actor and stage director. He then developed his theoretical concept of “conditional theatre,” reinterpreting classical plays in innovative ways and reimagining them within a renewed contemporary theatrical context.

Theatre for children is grounded in imaginative creativity and forms an educational, intellectual, and aesthetic tradition that refines a child’s spirit while developing taste, a sense of beauty, and openness. In Lebanon, plays designed for children began appearing in professional theatre venues in the late 1960s. The “Chouchou Children’s Theatre” was among the earliest and most significant initiatives, drawing a strong response from young audiences. In this article, I examine this phenomenon – which emerged spontaneously and without a clear methodology – with particular attention to audience reception.

This chapter focuses on the design approach used in the self-reflexive finale of the mobile augmented reality history game Jewish Time Jump: New York. In the finale, the iOS device itself and the player using it are implicated in the historical moment and theme of the game. The author-designer-researcher drew from self-reflexive traditions in theater, cinema, and nonmobile games to craft the reveal of the connection between the mobile device and the history that the learners were studying. This thesis and its corresponding art installation, Lessons from Ziggy, attempts to deconstruct the variables prevalent within several complex systems, analyze their transformations, and propose a methodology for reasserting the soap box within the display pedestal. In this text, there are several key and specific examples of the transformation of various signifiers (i.e. media-bred fear’s transformation into a political tactic of surveillance, contemporary freneticism’s transformation into complacency, and community’s transformation into nationalism as a state weapon).
