A Shopper's Tale: A Visual Narrative, Alexandra Kolker

This project approaches non-traditional storytelling through design. It serves to explore the research question: how can non-traditional presentations of narrative play with one's expectations and engage people to see their world differently? To do this, "A Shopper's Tale: A Visual Narrative" explores how narrative can be used in visual, everyday mediums to challenge the reader to experience a new way of presenting narrative.

This thesis of mixed-media pieces, The Cartographer series, combines, with stitches and rough lace work, miniature acrylic paintings, weavings, and various other elements. The materials come from three different spheres: traditional fine art materials, such as canvas and paint; handiwork materials, such as cross-stitch or needlepoint; reclaimed materials, such as burlap, wire, or string. Thread is used to both draw and connect. Stitches not only lock each element in place, they create links and relationships between painted pieces, thread, and empty space.

Storytelling In Comics: Who, When, And Where In “Here”, Michael W. Hancock

Comics and Graphic Novels

Richard McGuire’s groundbreaking short comic “Here” (1989) revolutionized storytelling possibilities in comics. It may be used within a short story unit to demonstrate familiar elements of fiction, including setting, plot, and character. Moreover, its inventive use of panels within panels to juxtapose past, present, and future can serve as a model for students’ visual rendering of multiple points in time within a single location.
