Odysseus: From Homer To Sophocles, Jonas Hammond

In two of his plays, the Ajax and Philoctetes, the tragedian Sophocles uses and alters Homer’s Odysseus to augment the moral message he is trying to instill in his audience. His use of Odysseus changes between these two plays as his moral outlook shifts in the face of changing Athenian fortunes. As the focus of his praise moved away from guiles and sophia to focus more on the “noble ideal,” the ubiquity of Homer’s version of Odysseus meant that Odysseus’ character had to be actively altered when Sophocles wished to encourage the Athenians to follow the noble ideal instead of …

Conversationalists and critics alike continue to take delight in Tom Bombadil, yet remain perplexed by his enduring enigma. Interpretive positioning appears to be determined by the semantics of the term enigma deployed and how it intersects with any of the several textual standpoints adopted. The primary contention of this article is that the enigma is intentionally both a riddle (noun) and a riddling (verb). Reading the enigma through literary features of the Old English riddle-song can yield an alternate interpretation of Tom Bombadil that has received scant attention in critical commentary. This exploration investigates the influence of Rumi’s book of poetry, Mathnawi, upon the Sufi practice of the Whirling Dervish dances. It argues that Rumi’s Mathnawi underlies the choreography of the Whirling Dervish dances. Each step of the dance expresses, manifests or embodies themes found in Rumi’s poetry: separation from Unity, ascension, annihilation, and a return to Unity. The thesis introduces this argument, and then discusses historical, theological, and linguistic themes related to Rumi, Sufism, and the Whirling Dervish dances. Following this, the thesis provides a framework that begins with the Neoplatonic theory of emanation grounding Rumi’s poetic thought, followed by …

This article deals with the work of poets belonging to the literary school called “Poets of the Yassaviya School” founded by Ahmad Yassavi. Since the works of the poets of this school came through manuscript sources, the work was based on manuscripts kept at the Institute of Oriental Studies named after Abu Rayhon Beruni of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The poets of this school are identified through examples of similarities and differences in their work. The extent to which these works are included in the manuscripts, and subsequent research has provided information on the extent …

This paper focuses on a hitherto unnoticed parody of a scene in Euripides' Auge by the comic poet Philyllius at the outset of the fourth century. It argues that fragment 4 from Philyllius' Auge , in which a man holds loaves of bread as though they were a baby, travesties the Euripidean scene in which Heracles holds the infant he has found in the wilderness. Review of Euripides' Auge and its relationship with satyr play, followed by analysis of the parody by Philyllius, demonstrates a confluence of tragedy, satyr play, and comedy in the period when mythological comedy was on …

This independent study examines Vergil’s Aeneid and Ovid’s Heroides and Metamorphoses with regard to Aeneas and Turnus as analogues for Roman citizens and Italic provincials respectively. As this project is primarily concerned with textual investigation, philological analysis of Vergil and Ovid’s texts takes center stage and is supplemented by contemporary material evidence and secondary scholarship in foundation narratology, identity, and political theory. So, whereas Vergil characterizes Aeneas as a dominant hero destined to found a new home for his people, the proto-Roman Trojans, and Turnus as a rebellious but ultimately ineffectual Italic monarch, Ovid presents the former as a detestable …

The poet and writer Sohrab Sipehri (1928-1980) played a particular role in the formation and development of Iranian poetry at the beginning of the twentieth century. This poet created his style of expression and was an enlightened person who provided a holistic connection of modern philosophical views with orthodox ideas.
