From Viðkenning To Valarindi: The Enigma Of Goldberry And The River-Woman, Derek Simon

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

THIS IS A TWO-PART ARTICLE. IN ORDER TO READ OR DOWNLOAD THE OTHER PART, FOLLOW THE LINK AT THE END OF THIS ABSTRACT.

Building upon the previous examination of the eddic and skaldic contours of Goldberry’s River kenning names, this reading of Goldberry’s enigma focuses on the mythological referents of her kinship relations and their narrative consistency in the legendarium.  Tending to the intrinsic connection between “[t]he incarnate mind, the tongue, and the tale” (Tolkien, On Fairy Stories, 41), I contend that the poetics of kenning diction sustain if not demand a reading of the River-woman references mythologically through …

Medieval And Modern: Celtic Mythology Through The Lens Of Urban Fantasy, L. E. Martchenke Jun 2024

Medieval And Modern: Celtic Mythology Through The Lens Of Urban Fantasy, L. E. Martchenke

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

My project, “Medieval and Modern: Celtic Mythology Through the Lens of Urban Fantasy” is the result of my interest and investment in Celtic mythology, and more specifically Irish mythology, most of our knowledge of which comes from records in the medieval period, made by Christian monks. I pursued research into Medieval Celtic myth and folklore to gain a deeper understanding of those stories of mythological figures and heroes. With that knowledge and genuine love for the source material, in this thesis, I have crafted three individual and distinct stories that capture mythological elements, such as a prominent Folk Hero or …

The Irish Dracula: A Melodrama In Five Acts, James Doan

Humanities and Politics Faculty Book and Book Chapters

While working on the first volume in the project, The Universal Vampire: Origins and Evolution of a Legend (Rowman & Littlefield, 2013) I decided to try my hand at adapting the novel Dracula to a more literal Irish context. Set in London and Co. Sligo in 1888, it constitutes a prequel to the novel. The play, entitled The Irish Dracula: A Melodrama in Five Acts, received two initial readings: the first with the Irish Theatre of Florida in August 2012 and the second at the American Conference for Irish Studies (ACIS) West meeting in Park City, Utah, in October 2012. …

The Attitude Of Yeats And Stephens Toward The Irish Fairy World Compared With The Traditional Attitude, Josephine M. Purtell Apr 1930

The Attitude Of Yeats And Stephens Toward The Irish Fairy World Compared With The Traditional Attitude, Josephine M. Purtell

Bachelors’ Theses

The subject of the fairy world in modern Irish literature should prove rather interesting to Americans because there are so many conflicting ideas in the minds of casual readers of Irish literature. The person who would pick up Yeats' drama, "The Land of Heart's Desire" might, be led to believe that the work of modern Irish writers is thoroughly imbued with a fantastic spirit; while he who would read "The Silver Tassie" or "Juno and the Paycock" by O'Casey might draw the conclusion that the spirit of scientific scepticism which is so prevalent in the world today has affected the …
