Mario Rufino Méndez Y La Caricatura Política En Nuestra Raza: Estudio Testimonial De Una Rica Producción Cultural De Los Afro-Uruguayos (1933-1948), María Cristina Burgueño

Modern Languages Faculty Research

This work is a one volume published by the National Library of Uruguay with a prologue by Dr. George Reid Andrews. It provides an in depth analysis of the corpus of caricatures made by Mario R. Mendez, an afro-Uruguayan artist, for the magazine “Our Race” during its second period 1933-1948. These editorial caricatures made a strong statement against the Fascism in Europe and the League of Nations’ attitude towards the invasion of Ethiopia ordered by Benito Mussolini. They also satirized the political and social reality in Uruguay. Both, the caricatures and the magazine provide a testimony of an extensive cultural …

Mirroring Reality: Music In Video Games, Allison Burr Dec 2014

Mirroring Reality: Music In Video Games, Allison Burr

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This paper explores the effectiveness of music in video games in terms of mood setting and immersion. The effectiveness of the emotion evoked is studied through both personal and scholarly research. Four video games are explored from different game genres. In "Bioshock" and "Fallout 3", the music immerses the player into the environment of the video game, whether it is an underwater dystopia or the post apocalyptic Washington DC area. "Dead Space", a survival horror game set on an abandoned mining vessel in space, pushes the boundaries in terms of musical dissonance and terror by using innovative sound design. The …

Lighting Design Proposal For Tom Stoppard's "Rosencratz And Guildenstern Are Dead", Nikolai Eiteneer Dec 2014

Lighting Design Proposal For Tom Stoppard's "Rosencratz And Guildenstern Are Dead", Nikolai Eiteneer

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Tom Stoppard’s tragicomedy, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (1964), earned the early popularity and the world-wide reputation that such a work deserved, booting Tom Stoppard into the limelight as an up-and-coming young writer. The play itself verges on an absurdist style, but due to the realistic nature of the title characters, the audience members find themselves sympathizing with their plight and lack of knowledge though any theatre goer acquainted with the works of Shakespeare, and Hamlet in particular, will know the final outcome of the play. For those not endowed with such knowledge, however, Stoppard gave the end away. Rosencrantz …

Let Them Make Art: Why Unified Arts Festivals Are Beneficial For Independent Artists, Anton Gress Dec 2014

Let Them Make Art: Why Unified Arts Festivals Are Beneficial For Independent Artists, Anton Gress

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Artistic disciplines typically have two markets: corporate, and independent (mainstream and underground, if you will). The corporate market accounts for a small fraction of all artists and reaches the largest audience, while the independent market accounts for the vast majority of working artists, yet remains niche. The issue is marketing. Even the most successful independent artists cannot match the selling power of large companies. This project seeks to illustrate the potential of unified arts festivals to facilitate greater audience exposure for independent artists, and how this may benefit the artistic community.

The arts communities at Chapman University have a similar …

Spring 2015 Apparel Line: Refined Simplicity, Rachael Y. Misiuta

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Valuing in the billions of dollars, the fashion market is one of the biggest industries in the world and most of that money doesn’t come from selling a few couture pieces to wealthy clientele, but from selling hundreds of thousands of more reasonably priced pieces to the masses. This paper is not meant as a business plan on how to penetrate the market, but rather it seeks to answer the question, “will this apparel line sell?” While creating these designs, the target market was kept in mind and what these potential customers are looking for: simple designs that are easy …

Interpretative Ingredients: Formulating Art And Natural History In Early Modern Brazil, Amy Buono

Art Faculty Articles and Research

"In this article I look at two early modern texts that pertain to the natural history of Brazil and its usage for medicinal purposes. These texts present an informative contrast in terms of information density and organization, raising important methodological considerations about the ways that inventories and catalogues become sources for colonial scholarship in general and art history in particular."

La Brigada Ramona Parra; Muralismo Y Cambio Social En Chile / La Brigada Ramona Parra ; Muralismo And Social Change In Chile, Sarah Baumann

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Bilingual Typography: Study Of The Linguistic Landscape Of Jeddah, Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Shayna Tova Blum

Faculty and Staff Publications

Abstract: With the rise of globalization and the spread of Western culture across the globe, the use of English as an “international” language is often represented in bilingual and multilingual typographic signage. Throughout the Middle East North Africa and the Gulf region, the integration of Arabic and Latin letterforms is commonly viewed within the signage of storefronts, street signs, advertising billboards, and informational materials. This paper explores the use of bilingual/multilingual typography within the linguistic landscape of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Timelessness In Sustainable Product Design, Alex Lobos Oct 2014

Timelessness In Sustainable Product Design, Alex Lobos

Presentations and other scholarship

Shorter product lifespan driven by reduced durability and planned obsolescence is causing severe environmental issues and diminishing user experience. Sustainable Design is addressing this problem with strategies that improve a product’s lifecycle and address important areas of impact in manufacturing, use, and end of life. This article explores how the concept of ‘timelessness’ can be used as an effective strategy for creating products that are cherished and enjoyed by their users, last longer, are easier to repair and have better options for end-of-life. A series of case studies found in commercial products as well as in student projects illustrate how …
