Afterlife: Exploring And Accepting Ideas Through Children's Literature, Kiley Vandevelde Dec 2021

Afterlife: Exploring And Accepting Ideas Through Children's Literature, Kiley Vandevelde

Honors Projects

This project is a written and illustrated book for children to assist with the grieving process by exploring different cultural representations of the afterlife. Death is an inescapable part of the human condition. Belief in an afterlife can help children retain a connection to the deceased and can be a useful tool for healing. While very young children (age four to five) inherently believe in existence after death, this decreases after the age of ten. This book targets children aged seven to ten and explains the benefit to believing in an afterlife. It explores different ideas surrounding the afterlife and …

Paralyzed Within A Plastic World, Gena Leib Dec 2021

Paralyzed Within A Plastic World, Gena Leib

Honors Projects

Our oceans are one of the largest ecosystems found on our planet, and they are also one of the driving forces to a balanced planet. I believe that it is very important to restore our oceans to the once clean environment, and it is up to mankind to make that first step to do so soon and without hesitation. I believe that many people are uniformed on the topics of pollution, and it is important to bring attention to the issues through a perspective that society can see. Social media has had a huge influence on helping this, but for …

Water Color: Inspiring Conservation Of Freshwater Ecosystems By Painting With Algae, Kate Lochridge Dec 2021

Water Color: Inspiring Conservation Of Freshwater Ecosystems By Painting With Algae, Kate Lochridge

Honors Projects

“Water Color: Inspiring Conservation of Freshwater Systems by Painting With Algae” is a project that focuses on raising awareness of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie through the creation of algae-based paint. Its goal is to provide a multidisciplinary outlet for understanding complex interactions between the causes, effects, and solutions of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). The novel part of this project is the creation of watercolor paint from algae cells. This paint was used to create algae-based artwork that facilitates an aesthetic interaction with the science of HABs when other informative materials- such as journal articles- can be confusing and …

Improving Academic Success: Creating A College Planning Resource For Students, Hannah Grunden Dec 2021

Improving Academic Success: Creating A College Planning Resource For Students, Hannah Grunden

Honors Projects

Academic performance of students is a major concern for colleges, especially with the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Research has shown that active involvement, the development of self-regulation skills, and improved mental health all have a considerable impact on college students’ academic success. Colleges like Bowling Green State University need to consider how they can use these factors and leverage resources to improve student performance. In this project, a solution is proposed in the form of a college/personal planner which is directly based off research on early academic success. While further, more specific research is needed to fully understand the issue and …

The Puppy In The Polka Dot Pajamas: Animating Children's Literature Through Short Film, Grace Phillips Dec 2021

The Puppy In The Polka Dot Pajamas: Animating Children's Literature Through Short Film, Grace Phillips

Honors Projects

The following written defense describes the guiding research, methodologies, and end results of my yearlong project - creating a digital children’s book and an accompanying short film. The project was initially inspired by an event at home in which my family was laughing at our small dog for the way he looked after we dressed him in pajamas, after which my dad made a comment that it would be heinous of us to treat a human being the same way. This comment inspired me to adopt my own approach as to how humans can learn from the animal kingdom. The …

The Role Of Empathy In Design And The Responsibility Of Designers To Create With Their User In Mind, Emma S. Brenchley Jun 2021

The Role Of Empathy In Design And The Responsibility Of Designers To Create With Their User In Mind, Emma S. Brenchley

Honors Projects

By looking at several professional and personal design case studies, I aim to identify the weight of responsibility of a designer in a fast-paced, aesthetically driven world through the lens of human-centered design. This study observes how putting people first might not be a quick money-maker but will ultimately create a more successful, well-received project designed for the people it is intended for.

From Marginal To Mainstream: The Queer History Of Camp Aesthetics & Ethical Analysis Of Camp In High Fashion, Emily Barker Jun 2021

From Marginal To Mainstream: The Queer History Of Camp Aesthetics & Ethical Analysis Of Camp In High Fashion, Emily Barker

Honors Projects

‘Camp’ has become a buzzword in fashion over the last few years, due to a rise in popularity following the 2019 MET Gala theme, “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” Based on Susan Sontag’s 1964 book “Notes on Camp,” the event highlighted many aesthetic elements of Camp sensibilities, but largely ignores the importance of the LGBTQ+ community in Camp’s development. In this piece, I highlight various intersections of Camp and queerness over the last century and attempt to understand Camp’s place in High Fashion today.

Metamorphosis: An Exploration Of Transformation In Artmaking, Scarlet Sevits Apr 2021

Metamorphosis: An Exploration Of Transformation In Artmaking, Scarlet Sevits

Honors Projects

My creative project begins with wanting to know how the art making process relates to the process of metamorphosis and the extent to which this process can achieve realism. To explore this question, I chose related subject matter that is the female mythological figures of Ovid’s epic poem Metamorphoses who undergo transformation of the human body. I also chose a methodology that relates to my question. The acts of painting and writing can be explored as processes of transformation and both processes attempt to convince the viewer or reader of reality: the reality of a living figure or the emotional …

Site, Power, And Experience: Three Contemporary Installation Works On Global Mobility, Xiyin Sabrina Lin Jan 2021

Site, Power, And Experience: Three Contemporary Installation Works On Global Mobility, Xiyin Sabrina Lin

Honors Projects

This Honors Project investigates the themes of immigration, space, and mobility through the lens of contemporary installation art. It addresses a brief history of global contemporary art, arguing that art of the past two decades has been shaped by preoccupations with and tensions surrounding space. Using the works of Yanagi Yukinori, Alfredo Jaar, and Doris Salcedo as case studies, the essay analyzes how artists use the medium of installation to address institutional history, contemporary geopolitics, as well as individual and collective experience. It interrogates the different aspects of installation art, including temporality, site-specificity, and the use of language, to demonstrate …

Skin Deep: Analyzing Black Representation In The Teaching Of Visual Arts, Destiny Arianna Kearney Jan 2021

Skin Deep: Analyzing Black Representation In The Teaching Of Visual Arts, Destiny Arianna Kearney

Honors Projects

My honors thesis argues that at Bowdoin College, failure to provide Culturally Relevant Teaching in art studio courses dismisses the representation of Blackness in the Visual Arts Department. Culturally Relevant Teaching (CRT) recognizes the importance of all students' cultural experiences in different aspects of learning. It allows for equitable access to education for students of diverse backgrounds. CRT is crucial to reconstructing Art Education to represent diverse student bodies. My position as a Black-Indigenous artist enables me to reflect on the intersection of these frameworks and to build upon them in order to highlight the need for pedagogical practice in …
