Educational Development Of Preston County, George P. Ayersman

Preston County 1g ono of the important counties of the State of West Virginia. It borders on two state a, Pennsylvania and Maryland, and four counties of West Virginia, Tucker, Barbour, Taylor and Monongalia. Preston County was formed from Monongalia in 1818. It has an area of seven hundred square miles, being one of the larger counties of the state. It extends along the full eastern Maryland line, thirty-six miles and along the Mason and Dixon line, twenty-two miles. The first efforts to provide education were patterned after the schools in England. Also, included apprenticeships for orphans sent from the …

Sermonettes For Boys And Girls, Julius Fischbach
Fischbach, Julius, 1894-
According to a newspaper article included in Marshall’s copy of the book, Sermonettes is the “third of Dr. Fischbach’s books to be published in the field of religious teaching for boys and girls.” As he writes in the Foreword, “It is hoped that many of the boys and girls themselves will honor the book by reading its pages. It has been a labor of love, because there is no finer audience than the children of our churches and our firesides.”
It is likely that the sermons were delivered outside Appalachia. Fischbach, however, has significant ties to the region, so they …

The Morgan family papers consist of business, general and family correspondence, as well as legal and financial papers. Much of the business correspondence, dating from 1840 to 1935, is concerned with John Morgan's business ventures, first as a store keeper in Shenandoah County, Virginia, and later as a farmer in Putnam Country, Virginia, now West Virginia. The general correspondence consists of letters from friends and dates from 1843 until 1900. The family correspondence is composed of letters from members of the immediate Morgan family, and includes letters from members of three generations. It is well to note here that there …

The Hammat Family Papers consist primarily of correspondence between members of the Giles and Samuel Hammat families of Wood (later Pleasants) County, (West) Virginia and their relatives in Virginia and Missouri, between 1829 and 1860. Included in this portion of the papers are letters from Samuel B. Hammat to his brother John; they describe his journey down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers during the winter of 1846-1847. Also of interest are the letters written by various relatives describing their settlements in Missouri in the 1840's and 1850's.
