This collection consists of pamphlets, papers, and other materials related to Vaughn’s practice of teaching in West Virginia. This includes books, pamphlets, and schedules related to the West Virginia Teachers’ Institute, an 1864 primer, handwriting workbooks, and other ephemera. Other materials include a 1920 almanac, an 1897 Farm and Home newspaper, religious programs and pamphlets, two postcards from students, tour books from the Chicago and New York World’s Fair in 1933 and 1939 respectively, and Washington D.C.

This collection consists of an eclectic mix of materials collected by Childers throughout her professional career. They include a 1904 letter from Principal Corbly regarding an institution not accepting Childress’ teaching certificate, a pamphlet entitled “Flood Views of Huntington, W.Va.” [1913], a 1930 Marshall commencement program, a newspaper clipping about the death of Knute Rockne, official programs for the National Education Association from 1911 and 1936, a 1928 Marshall College Directory, a program for the Huntington Women’s Club’s Freiburg Passion Play, and the envelope the collection was received in.

This collection consists of an oath of allegiance for Enos Amos’ election to the office of second lieutenant, 17th Regiment, 3d Brigade, 1st Division, West Virginia Militia, Marion County, West Virginia on August 22, 1864. It is also signed by John B. Crane, recorder.

This collection consists of seven nineteenth century documents, including: An 1830 account of goods sold. The two parties are P. Beirne & Co. (spelling uncertain) and Benjamin Lemasters, and it is unclear of who is selling goods to whom. Survey of Lemasters’ plot of 1135 acres in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. The same mylar enclosure includes another copy of a survey from 1788 for Henry Banks. Letter dated 1835 form the War Department’s Pension Office to Lemasters relating to his service in the Revolutionary War.

This is an artificial collection of materials purchased or found by James Jeffrey behind a wall panel in a Huntington, WV apartment. The series of letters was found behind said wall panel and the financial ledger was purchased from Lilley’s Bookshop in Parkersburg, WV.

The letters are broken down as follows:

“Ima Turdlet (?)” to “The Right Hon. Mr. E. C. Hatfield Esq”, undated. This is a scathing seven-page letter regarding the breakup or divorce of the writer’s relationship with Hatfield.

This collection contains copies of two letters written by Morgan possibly to his cousin Lydia in 1891 and 1892 related to family matters, including daily life, farming, and marriage. Also included is the envelope for the 1892 letter addressed to James J. Casey of Huntington, WV. Other materials in the collection are copies of Ivory Soap advertisements, possibly an envelope that contained the letters. Given that these materials are copies, legibility varies.

He also discusses various political figures including Alban Barkley, Happy Chandler, chief Justice Frederick Vinson, Harry Truman, Joseph McCarthy, Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson, John F. Kennedy (and his assassination), and Barry Goldwater.

The cover of the diary says, “Romance of the War by James N. Potts [illegible] Commissary [illegible] Book Commencing Dec. 12th, 1861 Hunter’sville, Va, Pocahontas Co., Virginia”. Personal and family papers comprise a large portion of this collection. Miss Enslow collected numerous newspaper and magazine clippings on a variety of subjects, especially those dealing with socially prominent individuals on the local, national, and international levels. Too, she saved many items of correspondence between members of her family. Magazines, booklets, scrapbooks, and books are also included in this part of the collection. Most notable among the books is the Kelly Family Bible, which belonged to her maternal ancestors.

Given the collection’s small size, the decision was made to keep the collection’s original order as found and not divide into series. Broader thematic content of the collection includes state level financial and treasurer’s papers organizing the conference as well as financial documents submitted to receive reimbursement from the IWY grant funds appropriated by Congress. Additional state materials include correspondence to and from the Treasurer for WV IWY, Betsy McCreight, publicity materials and brochures, reports, and financial material related to delegates attending the national conference.

Box 3 includes materials for the national IWY Conference, including manuals, publicity materials, and publications.
