Carrie Eldridge is a genealogical researcher in Chesapeake, Ohio. This collection contains photocopies of many county record books of the Appalachian areas of West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky, ranging from the American Revolution until the early twentieth century. It also contains her personal research files on topics related to slavery and the Underground Railroad in Ohio and West Virginia as well as local history topics such as church and family histories.

This collection consists of copies of newspaper clippings related to the life and death of William Spiller Rosenheim. Clippings are related to his practice as a dentist, his marriage, and his sudden death, including tributes form colleagues.

Also included in the collection are transcriptions from his journal of 1899 and 1900 when he was living in Wytheville, Virginia. In these brief snippets, he provides detailed descriptions of himself, including various measurements, as well as provides accounts of spending and what he did. This collection consists of copies of materials related to Samuel Jordan Cabell found in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. These papers include copies of military bounty land warrants and scrip issued in 1832 as well as a will and some correspondence. Materials created after Cabell’s death are primarily by his son Patrick Henry Cabell. Because these materials are copies, legibility can be limited.

This collection consists of eleven pages copied from the Burlington Presbyterian Church record book containing the “Record of the Establishment Proceedings of the Presbyterian Church of Burlington, Lawrence County, Ohio.” The text includes a list of members, minutes and notes, and a list of baptisms between 1826 and 1828. It also includes copies of a more modern photograph of the church added later and a copy of a typed page about the Kanawha Presbytery, First Presbyterian Church in Huntington, West Virginia. Due to the fact that all pages are copies, legibility can vary.

In 1963, the shock waves of the sit-in movement and the growing black unrest throughout the country reached Huntington. This growing discontent with the status quo of segregation and racial discrimination and the impulse from the sit-in movement for direct, non-violent protest combined to mobilize several students at Marshall University who formed the Civic Interest Progressives (CIP), a biracial civil rights group.

This collection consists of one account book created by J. N. Manley, treasurer for the town of Mason, West Virginia. The account book includes financial accounts between the town and citizens between 1895 and 1919, a list of voters from 1927, and counts for votes for elections from 1935.

Dr. Pat Tuckwiller was born on April 13, 1905, in Morgantown, West Virginia. He received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, in 1929 and began practicing internal medicine in Charleston, West Virginia, on April 1, 1932. Dr. Tuckwiller discusses making house calls in Kanawha County, West Virginia, and focuses on the most common illnesses he treated and the medicines and procedures he used. Black White Differences On The K-Abc In An Appalachian Sample, Edward L. Winter

This study investigated the effect of race on black and white Appalachian children's performance on the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) Global Scales. The Global Scale standard scores of 24 black (12 males and 12 females) and 24 white (12 males and 12 females) children between the ages of 6-0 and 12-6 were used. The white children were randomly selected to match the age, sex and family education levels of the black children. Multivariate analysis of variance results indicated that there were no overall race, sex, or Race x sex interaction effects on the pattern of scores of the …

Gang during 1951 regarding the proposed location of West Virginia’s first medical school. Lawrence B. Gang, a leading member of the Cabell County Medical Society, advocated for Huntington and his correspondence features reports and attached supporting his stance. Also included in the collection is a final report entitled, “Report by Okey L.
