In his thesis, Hillbillies and Sharecroppers: an introduction to East coast and Mississippi blues guitar styles, along with the accompanying CD performance, John Taylor discusses pre-WWII blues. The discussion includes regional guitar styles as well as physicalities involved in the performance of early acoustic blues in Appalachia and Mississippi. There is a chapter devoted to subjects covered in early blues songs with a list of lyric examples as well as a biography section devoted to both white and black performers in these styles. The scrapbook includes extensive clippings and a limited number of photos of the 1937 flood in Huntington, West Virginia. Ephemera includes a copy of “The Belle of Barcelona: A Musical Comedy in Three Acts”, a 1929 program for said comedy at Huntington High School, and a ticket, pamphlet, clipping, and envelope about the 1976 American Freedom Train in Huntington.

Topics covered in the clippings and ephemera include trains, Huntington history, images of women, and local news and obituaries. Most significant about the collection is the unique assortment and number of items present, capturing a snapshot of life in early to mid-twentieth century Huntington, West Virginia and America.

The frontier period of the Kanawha Valley provides an interesting example of the sometimes dramatic change that occurred on the fringes of American civilization as it inched across the continent. Within twelve years of the creation of the county, it had developed from an embattled military buffer region into a quiet backwoods town. For the first six years, Indian attacks constantly assailed the settlements along the Kanawha River. Very likely, without the quality of leadership in the towns and military posts, the population would have retreated into safer regions of Virginia. This collection consists of copies of the twelve volume court transcript for the case of the State of Ohio vs. William Lemaster, case no. 92-CR-61 in the court of common pleas. Lemaster was accused and convicted of the kidnapping and murder of Jeff Halley and his son Jeff Halley, Jr. The court transcript includes jury selection, exhibits, and testimony.

This collection consists of a copy of the narration for the four-part documentary "West Virginia," produced by WNP-TV (Morgantown) public television; accompanied by classroom teacher's guide prepared by Osterman Associates. The narration covers only briefly the life of Native Americans living on the land that would become West Virginia, but focuses on the settlement of West Virginia by Europeans to the 1920s.

This collection is composed of the twelve interviews conducted by Carrie Kline as part of her Rockefeller Fellowship with the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Gender in Appalachia on “Appalachian Resiliency in Sexual Minorities.” All interviews have been anonymized, but basic information about the individuals has been retained. Interviewees were southern West Virginians who identified as being gay, lesbian, or transgender and spanned in age from their 20s to their 70s. Materials in the collection use terminology that is now considered outdated and terms used have been updated for inclusion in this finding aid.

This collection consists of a copy of an approximately 352 page payroll ledger for Etna Iron Works, based in Lawrence County, Ohio. Names of each person being paid are at the top of each page with payments being remitted listed on the page itself. Notes from the person who copied the ledger transcribe some names. Due to the copied nature of this item, legibility is limited. The original ledger is listed as being in the Briggs Public Library in Ironton, Ohio.

I would not be a fisherman today, if it were not for my father. He taught me to fish, cast, tie a fisherman’s knot, identify one species of fish from another. He also taught me courage. Often when we fished from one of Kelley’s Island’s many limestone shores, Dad stopped casting and dropped to his knees beside a rock. With a quick hand, he snatched brown water snakes as long as his arm. Holding the writhing serpent in front of my face, he would order me to touch it.

Lowell E. Long’s interview focuses on the region of Appalachia: its location, environments, people, and identity. Mr. Long was born in April 1941 in War, McDowell County, WV. His family moved to East Liverpool, OH, after World War II, and relocated to Huntington, WV, in January 1945. In the audio clip provided, Mr. Long discusses what it means to be Appalachian and focuses on family bonds and sense of belonging in the region. Appalachia can lay claim to many authors who have written works worthy of critical analysis and scholarly research, as the literature they have produced warrants consideration. This consideration, however, is often not forthcoming, and it is the situation concerning West Virginia author Denise Giardina. To date there has been no definitive, full-length study on her and her literature. As an author of considerable talent, who by any measure has published literature of significant quality, she deserves serious scholarly study, not just as an author of regional literature, but also as a contemporary author of the late twentieth century.

Modern children’s literature stresses individualism and multiculturalism. The first concerns the push in children’s literature to place more emphasis on developing a child’s individuality, to celebrate individual triumph rather than communal action. This trend seems to have succeeded in its goal. As Perry Nodelman states in The Pleasures of Children’s Literature, “Surprisingly few texts for children celebrate the value of groups of people working together as equals as opposed to the power of individuals controlling groups” (121- 122).
