The Cam Henderson papers consist primarily of papers related to his career as a football and basketball coach at Muskingum, Davis and Elkins and Marshall Colleges. A significant part of the collection relates to his wife Roxie Bell Henderson and includes many personal and family items as well as material related to her career as a public school teacher. Included also is material gathered by Dr. Sam Clagg for his biography of Henderson and afterward. In January of 1937, the largest flood of record hit the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys. Lowell Thomas compared the flood of 1937 with the Great Flood of the Bible. While this exaggerates somewhat the magnitude of the disaster, the people of the Tri-State area must have felt their world was coming to an end; indeed, for the individuals killed in the deluge, their world did end. Yet, the Tri-State and the Ohio Valley survived the inundation. This collection consists of scripts for five WPBY programs. Each program is divided into tapes. Program one is composed of three tapes, while programs two through four are composed of two, and program five is composed of three. These tapes are transcripts of televised conversations with Jim Comstock in 1980, where Comstock speaks with the host “Dick” about subjects relevant to West Virginia, including poetry, politics, his lived experiences, and history.

This collection consists of seven nineteenth century documents, including: An 1830 account of goods sold. The two parties are P. Beirne & Co. (spelling uncertain) and Benjamin Lemasters, and it is unclear of who is selling goods to whom. Survey of Lemasters’ plot of 1135 acres in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. The same mylar enclosure includes another copy of a survey from 1788 for Henry Banks. Letter dated 1835 form the War Department’s Pension Office to Lemasters relating to his service in the Revolutionary War.

This collection predominately consists of a Civil War diary by James Potts. Legibility of the copy of the diary is limited given that it is a xeroxed black and white copy.

The cover of the diary says, “Romance of the War by James N. Potts [illegible] Commissary [illegible] Book Commencing Dec. 12th, 1861 Hunter’sville, Va, Pocahontas Co., Virginia”. The first thirty-one pages consist of a ledger tracking provisions for 1861-1862. In order, the contents after are as follows: recipes, ciphers or “enigmas”, journal entries from 1861 to 1867, an 1869 letter to the editor of the “Herald” from Williamsville, VA, …

Personal and family papers comprise a large portion of this collection. Miss Enslow collected numerous newspaper and magazine clippings on a variety of subjects, especially those dealing with socially prominent individuals on the local, national, and international levels. Too, she saved many items of correspondence between members of her family. Magazines, booklets, scrapbooks, and books are also included in this part of the collection. Most notable among the books is the Kelly Family Bible, which belonged to her maternal ancestors.

James A. Harmon was born in 1890 on his grandfather’s farm outside of Red House, WV. Mr. Harmon reminiscences about his childhood growing up on a 350-acre farm. He earned a sixth grade education at a two-room schoolhouse. When he was 14 years old, Mr. Harmon started his career on the river on the Steamer Calvert. During his interview, Mr. Harmon focuses on his varied jobs on many steamboats. Although he performed well in all of his duties, his greatest passion was engineering. Edward C. Jackson was born on January 17, 1911, in Canfield, Braxton County, WV. In 1926, he moved to Fenwick, Nicholas County, WV, to pursue jobs in saw mills. In his interview, Mr. Jackson describes in great detail the design and structure of the log home he lived in as a child. He focuses on growing up on a farm and places emphasis on the type of work he did and food preparation and preservation. Mr. Jackson also discusses the tight-knit community in which he was raised. William T. Arnold (Bill Arnold), a Native West Virginian, lived the majority of his life in Clay County. Mr. Arnold spent his early childhood on a farm on Galon Mountain. After the death of his father, Mr. Arnold moved with his family to various towns within Clay County. In 1911, when he was eleven years old, Mr. Arnold started his first job in coal mining, working thirteen hours a night as a water dipper. When he was eighteen years old, Mr. Arnold began working as a postman and delivered mail on a route near the New River, between the towns …

Ms. Enslow was a Huntington, West Virginia journalist. Photographs and slides comprise a major portion of this collection. Many of the photographs were for use by the newspaper; there are also a great number of informal snapshots, family photographs, and photographs of Miss Enslow herself. Photographs of notable persons and old photographic portraits dating from the 19th century complete this part of the collection. The slides are primarily those which Miss Enslow took in Europe while she was tour director for the Huntington Publishing Company. A Survey Of The Snake-Handling Cult Of West Virginia, Kenneth Paul Ambrose

For over half a century the snake-handling cult has been active in the United States, especially in the Appalachian area. There has been little scientific information published about this cult. The two major works were mainly confined to a single church in Durham, North Carolina, and a single church in Scrabble Creek, West Virginia. This investigator studied four churches in West Virginia, and one in Durham, North Carolina, for two and a half years to gain a deeper understanding of these people and their religious behavior.
