This article tells the story of Granville Hicks' life, especially his life during the 1940s, revealed through journals that are now held in Syracuse University's Special Collections. The author was famously a Marxist critic and member of the Communist party during the 1930s, before defecting in 1939 due to the Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact. He then somewhat retreated from intellectual life to become a member of a small community in Grafton, New York, closer to his rural upbringing. He struggled to try to better the small community in areas of civic institutions and racial prejudice, seeing Grafton as a microcosm of …

The "Black Dream" Of Gerrit Smith, New York Abolitionist, John R. Mckivigan, Madeleine Leveille

The Courier

This article tells the story of Gerrit Smith, a New York abolitionist who had been loosely linked to the raid on Haper's Ferry by John Brown. Shortly after the insurrection Smith was committed to an insane asylum by his family, and the scandal faded after John Brown's execution. Through their research in the Syracuse University Special Collections, the authors have uncovered much evidence affirming the financial link between Smith and John Brown. The authors also determined that the mental state of Smith seemed rather genuine, and he might have suffered from bipolar disorder. The fallout of the Smith scandal received …

The excavations and subsequent analysis of the Panther Creek Springs site, 41BX228, a multicomponent prehistoric open occupation site in south-central Texas, are documented in this report. The investigations at 41BX228 partially mitigate the loss of cultural information caused by looters and potentially by a proposed Soil Conservation Service flood control project. The field investigations carried out in 1979 included mapping, testing, backhoe trenching, and the excavation of several block areas. Large quantities of comparatively well-preserved cultural materials were recovered and analyzed including: lithic, ceramic, and bone artifacts as well as faunal and botanical remains. During December 1983, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an archaeological survey of a proposed dredge spoil site in Nueces County for the Port of Corpus Christi Authority. One site (41 NU 211) was located. Artifacts included one Early Archaic dart point fragment which suggests that 41 NU 211 may date as earl y as 4000 B.C. Limited testing is recommended to evaluate the site unless project plans are altered.

A Reconnaissance Of A Channel Dam Site And Flood Area On The San Saba River, Menard County, Texas, Joseph H. Labadie

During December 1984, a reconnaissance was carried out along portions of the San Saba River west of Menard, Texas. The purpose of the study was to examine the location where a new channel dam will be constructed, and areas upstream, including Presidio San Sabá (41 MN 1), to determine what cultural resources might be affected by any water level change as a result of dam installation.

The reconnaissance determined that construction of a new concrete dam to replace an earlier earthen dam of similar size will not impact any known cultural resources. The water level is not expected to be …

Archaeological investigations at site 41 HR 39 on De Zavala Point in Channelview, Harris County, Texas, were conducted by personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio from December 16 through December 22, 1984. The site is recorded as an aboriginal shell midden with a historic component which will be impacted by the proposed disposal of dredged materials under the Department of the Army Permit Application No. 17151, during industrial development of the area. During the month of April 1984, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted a surface survey and test excavations at the Hot Wells Hotel site in south San Antonio. The purpose of the project was to locate and map the foundations of a large brick resort hotel, built in 1901 and burned in 1925, and to locate and test remains of any other structures on the Hot Wells site. One additional brick foundation that appears contemporary with the hotel was located and mapped. Artifacts recovered pertained primarily to the hotel, or to …

During October 24-26, 1984, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), conducted a survey of approximately 30 acres of a housing development site on the northeast edge of Castroville in Medina County, Texas. The survey was required as part of Veterans Administration grant application. One area within the development zone was found to have a light surface scatter of cultural materials. This lithic scatter was recorded and assigned a permanent state site designation (41 ME 31). Shovel tests throughout the site area failed to produce any subsurface cultural material, and we recommend that …

In December 1983 the Center for Archaeological Research conducted test excavations at HemisFair Plaza in downtown San Antonio. The purpose of the work was to locate and document the condition of the Alamo Acequia (41 BX 8), which was known to be in the area. Backhoe and hand excavations revealed that the acequia deviated as much as 20 feet from the supposed route and that the original property lines through the area could not be depended upon to locate the precise route of the ditch. The fifth season of archaeological investigations at the Rancho de las Cabras (41 WN 30) was conducted in late May and June 1984, by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Austin, Texas. This field season the limits of the midden outside the northwest gate were better defined through shovel testing, and the surficial extent of another midden outside the east compound wall was mapped. Stratigraphic excavations inside and outside of Room 3 revealed a series of floors and outdoor activity surfaces and associated architectural features. To obtain …

The acequias or irrigation systems were an important factor in the early history of San Antonio. One of the earliest of these was the Acequia Madre (41 BX 8) or Mother Ditch. Recently, proposed construction by City Public Service at the 10th Street Substation was expected to encounter the course of the acequia, thus requiring archaeological investigation. Excavation of a section of the acequia with a backhoe and archival research revealed new information about the history of this ancient waterway.

During April 1985, personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted a pedestrian survey and shovel testing of the area to be affected by a proposed riverside park trail within the Victoria Municipal Park in Victoria County, Texas. The investigation was sponsored by the City of Victoria. The purpose of the survey was to locate any archaeological sites which might be impacted by construction of the proposed trail. No archaeological sites were identified during the project, and it is recommended that no further archaeological investigations are needed.

The Ruben Hancock Site (41TV875) is located on the centerline of the extension of Parmer Lane. This extension begins at FM 1325 (Burnet Road) and terminates at FM 620. The site was found during a survey of the right-of-way conducted by the author on the 9^th of August, 1984. Other sites were found during the survey but were too ephemeral or too disturbed to warrant further investigation. It was judged at the time of the survey that the Ruben Hancock Site, because of its undisturbed condition and the presence of metal and glass artifacts, warranted further investigation. It was …

The Rogers Site, 41BX22, is located on the east bank of a tributary to Salado Creek in northern Bexar County and has three major occupation or activity areas: a terrace-bench site with a burned rock midden, a small cave, and quarry areas on the bluff overlooking the bench and cave sites.

The terrace site was test-excavated by students in the mid-1960s. Primarily Late Prehistoric and Late Archaic materials were recovered with the Middle Archaic and possibly the Early Archaic being represented. Relic hunters have since thoroughly destroyed this portion of the site which lies just north of the FM 1604 …

Testing of Site 41BX679 along Farm to Market Highway 2696 in Bexar County, Texas, to determine eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places, cultural context, and archaeological significance was undertaken in April 1985. The site is located along a slight rise between Cibolo Creek and Muesebach Creek in northern Bexar County. It has been disturbed by previous construction or cutting of fire lines along Camp Bullis military reservation. Results of testing indicate that 41BX679 contained a minimal prehistoric component of unknown age. An intact hearth was uncovered but associated lithic debitage was almost totally absent. Evidence recovered …

Testing of Site 41BU24 on State Highway 36 in Burleson County, Texas, to determine eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places and to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological signbficance, was undertaken in January 1985. The site is located on a ridge overlooking Yegua Creek and extends into the creek floodplain. It has been heavily impacted by previous construction activities and the exact site limit is difficult to determine. Results of testing indicate that Site 41BU24 contains a minimal prehistoric component of unknown age which is thoroughly mixed with modern debris. Evidence recovered does not support …

The Waters Park community and Sites 41TV632 through 635 are located on the left bank of Walnut Creek near its headwaters traversed by the Southern Pacific Railroad, FM 1325, and the Waters Park Road. The sites pertaining to the old Waters Park community lying in the proposed right-of-way of the north extension of Loop 1 (MoPac Boulevard) are those cited above. The sites were identified in 1974 during an independent survey. A large number of other sites are found in or adjacent to the right-of-way. Improvements to US 67 in Shafter, Presidio County, Texas, will affect three cultural areas within existing or proposed right-of-way. These areas include (1) a small early twentieth century dump designated Site 41PS344, (2) Site 41PS109 which comprises two small associated historic structures, and (3) a relatively recent concrete slab. Site 41PS344 lies to the southwest and outside of the Shafter Historic Mining District, while Site 41PS109 and the concrete slab are located within the boundaries of the Historic District. The Shafter Historic Mining District is located along the floor and flanks of the low canyon of Cibolo Creek adjacent to and crossed by US 67, approximately 20 miles north of Presidio County, Texas (Fig 1) From the US 67 bridge, the creek flows to the southeast to a vertical cut made by the creek in the mountain massif. From there it flows due west to another steep rock bank and turns south.

The site is located on a terrace overlooking California Creek, a tributary of the Brazos River system. The site has been impacted by construction of a county road and bridge, by severe erosion and deflation, and by root plowing to remove mesquite trees from the area.
