The Hagadah Of Pesah In Amazigh Tradition, J. G. A. Saviranta
The Hagadah Of Pesah In Amazigh Tradition, J. G. A. Saviranta
Akseli Saviranta
This document examines the text of the Hagadah of the Jewish festivity of Pesah as celebrated by the North African Amazighs of Tinghir in Morocco. Its beginning presents an overview of the history and the cultures of the Amazigh, Jewish, and Judeo-Amazigh communities in North Africa. The celebration of Pesah, as a milestone in Jewish creed and history, is studied within the North African context and with particular attention to the local Hagadah translations. Among these translations, the Judeo-Amazigh text of Tinghir represents one of the few if not the only known text in existence in a Judeo-Amazigh language. A …
The Militarization Of Prayer In America: White And Native American Spiritual Warfare, Elizabeth Mcalister
The Militarization Of Prayer In America: White And Native American Spiritual Warfare, Elizabeth Mcalister
Elizabeth McAlister
This article examines how militarism has come to be one of the generative forces of the prayer practices of millions of Christians across the globe. To understand this process, I focus on the articulation between militarization and aggressive forms of prayer, especially the evangelical warfare prayer developed by North Americans since the 1980s. Against the backdrop of the rise in military spending and neoliberal economic policies, spiritual warfare evangelicals have taken on the project of defending the United States on the “spiritual” plane. They have elaborated a complex theology and prayer practice with a highly militarized discourse and set of …

A Functionalist Theory Of Oversight, Riccardo Pelizzo, Abel Kinyondo, Aminu Umar
A Functionalist Theory Of Oversight, Riccardo Pelizzo, Abel Kinyondo, Aminu Umar
riccardo pelizzo
The literature on oversight provides various approaches that have been used to measure oversight effectiveness. They include inferring oversight from the quality of governance, equating it with the presence of oversight activities as well as equating it with oversight capacity. However all these approaches are problematic as they wrongly consider oversight to be unidimensional. As a result they tend to produce measures that are too general and vague to provide a meaningful assessment of oversight effectiveness. It is in this context that this paper identifies the structural elements of oversight and goes on to contend that since oversight is a …
Oil Wealth, Resource Curse And Development: Any Lessons For Ghana?, Felix Kumah-Abiwu, Edward Brenya, James Agbodzakey
Oil Wealth, Resource Curse And Development: Any Lessons For Ghana?, Felix Kumah-Abiwu, Edward Brenya, James Agbodzakey
Felix Kumah-Abiwu
Ghana’s new status as an oil-producing country has invigorated the scholarly debate on the resource curse theory, which assumes that countries with vast natural resource wealth like oil, diamond and gold are likely to experience slow economic growth and development as compared to countries with scarce natural resources. Although the development literature is well endowed with cases of countries with huge natural resources that have experienced slow economic growth, the literature is also clear on few other countries with enormous natural resources that continue to experience high economic growth due to strong political institutions and democratic practices. Norway and Botswana …

The Phenomenon Of Exile As A Mutant Strain In Nigerian Narratives, Ignatius Chukwumah
The Phenomenon Of Exile As A Mutant Strain In Nigerian Narratives, Ignatius Chukwumah
Ignatius Chukwumah
Nigerian narratives are usually given socio-historical readings. This means that critics ground them to their seeming inalienable social and historical contexts from where they are said to be derived. In the operation of historical contextual grounding, scant regard oftentimes is given to the image of exile. This article, therefore, takes up for a close reading, the exilic figure in Nigerian narratives. It notes, through analysis, that this figure is hugely mutative as it emerges from Nigerian mythic narratives; realistic works, with Soyinka’s The Interpreters as a prime example; and quasi-realistic texts, such as Okri’s The Famished Road and others. With …

Mythic Displacement In Nigerian Narratives: An Introduction, Ignatius Chukwumah
Mythic Displacement In Nigerian Narratives: An Introduction, Ignatius Chukwumah
Ignatius Chukwumah
Abstract Five decades of resorting to humanistic critical procedures have bequeathed to the Nigerian critical practice the legacy of examining and discovering in Nigerian and African narratives the historical and social concepts of the time and times they are presumed to posit. These concepts include colonialism, corruption, war, political instability, and culture conflict. These procedures are undertaken without due regard to seeing the whole of the literary tradition as a stream out of which narratives emerge. This article, therefore, by way of introduction, seeks to retrieve Nigerian narratives from “every author” and humanistic critical approach by placing them in a …
Rethinking The Ideas Of Pan-Africanism And African Unity: A Theoretical Perspective Of Kwame Nkrumah’S Leadership Traits And Decision Making, Felix Kumah-Abiwu, James R. Ochwa-Echel
Rethinking The Ideas Of Pan-Africanism And African Unity: A Theoretical Perspective Of Kwame Nkrumah’S Leadership Traits And Decision Making, Felix Kumah-Abiwu, James R. Ochwa-Echel
James R. Ochwa-Echel
The search for Africa’s political unity has been one of the underlying ideas drawn from Pan- Africanism for several decades. Besides political leaders such as Sékou Touré and Modibo Keita with similar ideas on continental unity, Kwame Nkrumah was the central figure who vigorously championed the cause for Africa’s political unity. The role of Nkrumah as the iconic personality for the unification movement continues to attract scholarly attention and debate. This article contributes to the literature on Pan-Africanism and African unity by examining Nkrumah’s ideas and decision making through the lens of his leadership traits and personality styles. Grounded on …

The Right To Freedom Of Expression And Media Reporting On Criminal Proceedings In Tanzania: Finding The Balance, Joseph Wawa Raphael Futakamba S
Joseph Wawa Raphael Futakamba s
This paper examines the impact of media reporting to crime and criminal court proceeding in Tanzania in the light of exercising the legitimate right to freedom of expression by the press, on one hand and the accused rights to presumption of innocence and fair trial on the other hand. The purpose of the discussion revolves around the effect of prejudicial crime reporting to the criminal suspects/accused and available remedies within the legal system. It also, looks upon the court practices and the law in dealing with interference with the course of justice. The paper also analyses the rights of the …

Smart Power For Hard Problems: The Role Of Special Operation Forces Strengthening The Rule Of Law And Human Rights In Africa, Kevin H. Govern
Kevin H. Govern
This article will assess the roles and responsibilities of Special Operations Forces (SOF) within the newly created U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) as an active proponent of a so-called “smart power” national security strategy. In particular, it will outline the economic, political, and military challenges faced in Africa; specifically, how and why SOCAFRICA is the U.S. force of choice for promoting human rights and rule of law in Africa. With the goals of the U.S. military in mind, questions will necessarily arise as to “what success looks like” for both the U.S. and African nations, and the roles of each in …
The Symbolism Of Pollution In Beloved And Things Fall Apart, Ignatius Chukwumah
The Symbolism Of Pollution In Beloved And Things Fall Apart, Ignatius Chukwumah
Ignatius Chukwumah
This paper examines the symbolism of pollution in various modes in Toni Morrison’s Beloved and Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. He explains the symbolism of pollution as a mythic form contained and apprehended in literature. The interpretative procedure he uses is Ricoeur’s hermeneutics. As a probing instrument, it draws upon similar serial structures from these works exploring contrasts and aporias. Hermeneutics fits most because of the valued qualities of authorial distanciation, explication and readings derivable from majority of presences and textual existents. Of these readings, the symbolism of pollution grasped under the aspect of fear is the issue which exercises …
Can You Really See Through A Squint? Theoretical Underpinnings In The 'Our Sister Killjoy', Cheryl Sterling
Can You Really See Through A Squint? Theoretical Underpinnings In The 'Our Sister Killjoy', Cheryl Sterling
Cheryl Sterling
Ama Ata Aidoo’s Our Sister Killjoy is read as an inversion of the colonial travel narrative, addressing the continued asymmetrical power relations between Europe and Africa. The paper posits Sissie, its focal character, as a site of theoretical transformations, engaging with issues of racial subjectivity, sexuality and political positionality in relation to the neo-colonial African state. It further argues that Aidoo situates a performative self in the text through an interrogatory narrative voice that succeeds in both deforming the novelistic pattern and participating in the critique of Western subjectivity and hegemonic feminist positioning, while inserting a resistant feminist ideology into …
Women-Space, Power And The Sacred In Afro-Brazilian Culture, Cheryl Sterling
Women-Space, Power And The Sacred In Afro-Brazilian Culture, Cheryl Sterling
Cheryl Sterling
This article places Afro-Brazilian women in the midst of the discourse of globalization, in light of its impact on marginalizing women of color, economically, politically, and culturally. It extends the concept of globalizing discourses to the history of enslavement and the racialist policies in Brazilian society, as seen in its policy of embranquecimento and the myth of Brazil as a racial democracy. The article then analyzes the historic and present day role of Afro-Brazilian women in the religious tradition of Candomblé, focusing on one public festival in particular, the festa for the Yoruba-based orixá, Obaluaye, in Salvador da Bahia. It …

Die Opvoedkundige Waarde Van Woordeboeke : Voorstelle Vir Woordeboekonderrig In Suid-Afrika, Michele Van Der Merwe
Michele Van Der Merwe

Timbuktu: A Lesson In Underdevelopment, Riccardo Pelizzo
Timbuktu: A Lesson In Underdevelopment, Riccardo Pelizzo
riccardo pelizzo
Th e purpose of the present paper is to investigate Timbuktu’s economic decline in the three centuries elapsed between 1526, when Leo Africanus reached the Mysterious City, and 1830, when the fi rst European explorers arrived in Timbuktu. It is argued that Timbuktu’s decline was neither an accident nor the result of inevitable natural conditions. Timbuktu’s decay was the product of historical and social forces. Specifi cally, it is argued that Timbuktu lost power and prestige because its market decayed. However, it is also suggested that no single factor can account individually for this event. Th e crisis of Timbuktu’s …
From Military Politization To Militarization Of Power In Guinea-Conakry, Mohamed S. Camara
From Military Politization To Militarization Of Power In Guinea-Conakry, Mohamed S. Camara
Mohamed S. Camara
This historical analysis of state-military society relationship in Guinea focuses on Sékou Touré's political survival due in part to his political indoctrination of an army constantly involved in Pan-African battles and overshadowed by the National Militia. It also addresses this army's transition from a single-party regime to multiparty politics via a bloodless coup. Particularly underlined in the discussion, Touré's intelligent exploitation of Cold War localized manueuvers lays the ground for a conceptual framework envisioning the Guinean military as a revolutionary army. This theoretical argument is made in light of the sociological debate on the military and politics as sustained by …
