During August 2015 a laboratory for the conservation of Nigerian manuscripts in Arabic script was established at Arewa House, Ahmadu Bello University, Kaduna, Nigeria. In addition to a full range of hand tools, the lab is equiped with a variable speed control vacuum for cleaning manuscripts and a vacuum chamber pump machine for creating anoxic enclosures on bagged wet, moldy or insect infested manuscripts

In the wake of the 1952 Revolution, Egypt’s future Nobel laureate in literature devoted himself exclusively to writing for film. The Aesthetic of Revolution in the Film and Literature of Naguib Mahfouz is the first full-length study in English to examine this critical period in the author’s career and to contextualize it within the scope of post-revolutionary Egyptian politics and culture. This paper describes a focused conservation and preservation strategy whereby collections of sub-Saharan manuscripts, or even single manuscript items, are treated in stages, or phases, over a period of time according to a planned and logical sequence of procedures in order to achieve economies of scale and utilize resources most effectively. Also covered are issues that must be considered when conserving these manuscripts as well as the fundamental importance of surface cleaning, foldering, boxing, storage rooms and shelving, storage temperature and humidity control, cleanliness, staff and researcher training, emergency preparedness, item conservation and digitization.
