Subsidies, Aquaculture Technology Adoption, And Welfare Impacts In Ghana And Kenya, Akuffo Amankwah

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation empirically examines subsidies, aquaculture technology adoption, and welfare implications of fish farming households in Ghana and Kenya. It is divided into three separate chapters, each addressing a specific empirical issue related to aquaculture in the countries.

The second chapter of this dissertation applies the lognormal double hurdle model to a cross-section of fish farms to analyze commercial demand for improved feed, and whether the government feed subsidy program influences private demand for the feed. The results indicate that households’ decisions to participate in improved feed market are affected by the quantity of the subsidized feed received. Once the …

How Do Moroccan Teachers Conceptualize Citizenship?, Tarik Saadi

Open Access Dissertations

Citizenship education plays a critical role in the development of civic attitudes and contributes to the appropriate delivery of a government's policy. However, there is a discrepancy in the literature in defining the meaning and understanding of citizenship concepts. This study is primarily qualitative in nature, using the method of phenomengraphy to investigate teachers' perceptions of citizenship in Morocco. The study recruited six elementary and secondary teachers from Casablanca and Rabat in Morocco to identify their understanding of citizenship. I adapted the three-phase interview approach proposed by Irving Seidman (1998) to frame the interviews with the teachers. The findings demonstrated …

Assessing The Spatial Variability Of Soils In Uganda, Joshua Okach Minai Apr 2015

Assessing The Spatial Variability Of Soils In Uganda, Joshua Okach Minai

Open Access Theses

Uganda's soils were once considered the most fertile in Africa, but soil erosion and soil nutrient mining have led to soil degradation and declining agricultural productivity. Lack of environmental awareness among farmers, traditional agricultural practices, minimal inorganic fertilizer use, and little to no use of improved crop varieties all contribute to continued soil degradation. The objectives of this study were: (1) to characterize the spatial distribution of selected physical and chemical soil properties in Uganda on a national scale utilizing the data collected by Nkonya et al. (2008), and (2) to identify the major factors and processes that are dominant …

Analyzing The Importance Of Diversifying Beyond Tobacco For Small-Scale Farmers In Malawi, Mphatso Charity Mbulukwa

Open Access Theses

This thesis analyses potential agricultural alternatives to production and marketing of tobacco in Malawi. I study existing patterns of crop and income diversification and factors that limit crop diversification. I also provide an analysis of the current profitability of different important cash crop alternatives that are commonly grown among smallholder farmers and compare their profitability to that of tobacco.

Following a review and synthesis of available literature on alternatives to tobacco, analysis is presented that relies upon data collected in 2009 from 380 households in Kasungu and Machinga districts of Malawi. Simpsons Index of diversification was used to measure the …
