The Word In Africa: Orality And Literacy In Achebe's Things Fall Apart, Arrow Of God, And No Longer At Ease, Matthew Taggart

This paper is written in an attempt to shed light on the representation by Western academics, and by the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe, of African societies that did not use written forms of communication but used oral forms of communication. Achebe in his novels Things Fall Apart, Arrow of God, and No Longer at Ease portrays social aspects of orally based societies that may serve to further aid academic studies of orally dominated societies. Throughout the text of his novels Achebe reveals an intimate relationship between individuals and community that is essential to the strength of an oral …

Art And Symbolism In Ewe Religion: Ritual Objects Of The Yewe And Tro Mami Worship In Klikor, Ghana, Coleen Wright

This project investigated the symbolism represented through art in the Yewe and Tro Mami Worship in Klikor, Ghana. The research questions were what are the symbols expressed through art of the two religions and how do these symbols serve the religions. In order to do this I conducted informal interviewing, participant and non participant observations on several different occasions. Through this I was able to learn about the various relics and the function that they play in worship. The material I collected suggests that art symbolism play a vital role in religion.

This paper briefly describes the product. There is a discussion of proverbs and photographs as methods of communication. An examination of Asante and Dagari proverbs was conducted to see if the different role of the Dagaaba and Ashanti peoples in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade affected each respective society. Proverbs, culturally embedded statements, are derived from common experiences of the people and drawn from the whole of society. Therefore they capture and reflect each aspect of society as well. Thus proverbs are an ideal means of exploring the complex and sensitive issue of how the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade affected the people and vice versa. The Meaning Of The “Meaningless” Refrain In Igbo Folksongs And Storytelling Events, Chukwuma Azuonye

In this chapter, 'Chukwuma Azuonye...considers possible meanings of the “nonsense” refrains from Igbo folk songs that audiences sing during storytelling events in southeastern Nigeria. He classifies the refrains into eight categories, and concludes (and convinces the reader) that the “meaningless” description given to these refrains is erroneous. Each sound has a definite connotation, symbolic value, or specific meaning' (De Vos, Gail, 2001, Review of Traditional Storytelling Today: An International Sourcebook, ed. Margaret Reed Macdonald, Journal of American Folklore, Volume 114, Number 454, Fall, p. 503).

This article discusses the types of heroic narrative poetry that have been found to exist in Igbo culture and that, on the basis of the most universal and inalienable features of the genre, cannot but be recognized as folk epics. The admission of these forms as epics will no doubt have important implications for the comparative understanding of the nature of the genre and its future definition.
