The Aesthetic Of Revolution In The Film And Literature Of Naguib Mahfouz, Nathaniel Greenberg
The Aesthetic Of Revolution In The Film And Literature Of Naguib Mahfouz, Nathaniel Greenberg
Nathaniel Greenberg
In the wake of the 1952 Revolution, Egypt’s future Nobel laureate in literature devoted himself exclusively to writing for film. The Aesthetic of Revolution in the Film and Literature of Naguib Mahfouz is the first full-length study in English to examine this critical period in the author’s career and to contextualize it within the scope of post-revolutionary Egyptian politics and culture. Before returning to literature in 1959 with his post-revolutionary masterpiece Children of the Alley, Mahfouz wrote or co-wrote some twenty odd scripts, many of them among the most successful in Egyptian history. He did so at a time when …
History In The Making: Tunisia's Revolution, Nathaniel Greenberg
History In The Making: Tunisia's Revolution, Nathaniel Greenberg
Nathaniel Greenberg
ON THE NIGHT of January 24, 2011, I sat smoking shisha and sipping tea at a coffee shop in the downtown Cairo neighborhood of Lazoghly, just blocks from Tahrir Square. The Tunisian revolution had reached a crescendo, but there was little talk of it in this largely working-class neighborhood. With rumors spreading that protests were planned for the coming day, I asked some of the regulars if they thought Egypt could go the way of Tunisia. It was a laughable query. Egypt was too divided, they said, Mubarak too powerful. The following day seemed to confirm their skepticism. No one …
Anatomy Of Dissent In Islamic Societies, Ahmed Souaiaia
Anatomy Of Dissent In Islamic Societies, Ahmed Souaiaia
Ahmed E SOUAIAIA
The 'Arab Spring' that began in 2011 has placed a spotlight on the transfer of political power in Islamic societies, reviving old questions about the place of political dissent and rebellion in Islamic civilization and raising new ones about the place of religion in modern Islamic societies.
In Anatomy of Dissent in Islamic Societies, Ahmed E. Souaiaia examines the complex historical evolution of Islamic civilization in an effort to trace the roots of the paradigms and principles of Islamic political and legal theories. This study is one of the first attempts at providing a fuller picture of the place of …
Emergent Public Discourse And The Constitutional Debate In Tunisia: A Critical Narrative Analysis, Nathaniel Greenberg
Emergent Public Discourse And The Constitutional Debate In Tunisia: A Critical Narrative Analysis, Nathaniel Greenberg
Nathaniel Greenberg
The appointment of the Minister of Industry, the so-called “technocrat” Mehdi Jomaa, to form a caretaker government in Tunisia on the eve of the revolution’s third anniversary, threw into stark relief the country’s complex struggle for democracy following the January 14 revolution. The announcement came in the wake of the Islamist party Ennahdha’s sudden renunciation of the Prime Minister’s office in September, ostensibly a sign of cooperation in the face of mounting criticism surrounding the government’s failure to investigate the assassinations of two political opposition figures. A number of Western media outlets, including the New York Times, quickly absorbed the …

The Haitian Creole Language is the first book that deals broadly with a language that has too long lived in the shadow of French. With chapters contributed by the leading scholars in the study of Creole, it provides information on this language's history; structure; and use in education, literature, and social interaction. Although spoken by virtually all Haitians, Creole was recognized as the co-official language of Haiti only a little over twenty years ago. The Haitian Creole Language provides essential information for professionals, other service providers, and Creole speakers who are interested in furthering the use of Creole in Haiti …

One of the most intriguing and well-written volumes [in The Heritage Library of African Peoples] is that on the Dogon. In short order Chukwuma Azuonye gives a portrait of a people who are, as the author puts it, "renowned for their complex philosophy and world view and advanced scientific knowledge” (Waller, Leon. 2000, Review of The Heritage Library of African Peoples: Set 2: West Africa. 14 vols. The Rosen Publishing Group, New York, 1994-97; In: African Arts, Vol. 33, No. 1 (Spring, 2000, p.93).

Nsukka Harvest: Poetry From Nsukka, 1966-1972, Chukwuma Azuonye
Chukwuma Azuonye
This first collection of poetry from the post-independence Nigerian Crisis, the Biafra war of independence, and their aftermaths (1966-1972) is a harvest of the vision and commitments of the second generation of Nsukka student poets. Most of the poets represented in this harvest have gone on to publish collections of their own poetry and to claim a place in the canons of modern Nigerian poetry.

An illustrated color brochure, featuring my poem "Rituals eines Angriffs" [Rituals of Raids] about the uncanny resemblance of the ubiquituous air raids of the day and the raids on chicken by hawks ritually reenacted in the routines of the hawk mask Ojionu on festive occasions (plus poetry by five other Biafran poets)
