This collection consists of the records produced and collected by the Saturday Afternoon Club of Rock Hill. The records consists of meeting minutes, constitution and bylaws, correspondence, rosters, yearbooks, calendars, and other records. There is also some yearbooks related to the Women’s Club of Rock Hill of which the Saturday Afternoon Club was a member. The Saturday Afternoon Club was organized in 1922 and was federated into the South Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1924. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and despite the fact that white women often discriminated against them, African American women across the United States worked to obtain voting rights for all women. Nationally, black women used the African American club movement and their experiences in church benevolent societies to advocate for women’s suffrage. In some cases, however, a widespread and thriving club movement did not lead to suffrage activities. In Knoxville, Tennessee, there is no evidence that the clubwomen participated in the suffrage movement. This thesis outlines the specific social conditions that caused to black clubwomen’s lack of …

This thesis is about the Women's Club Movement in Dayton, Ohio, using the music clubs as a case study. The dates encompassed range from the formation of the Mozart Club in 1888 to the formation of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra in 1933. The formation of women's clubs, by both white and black women, was a national phenomenon, and Dayton exemplified what was going on throughout the United States. The Pierian Book Club of Rock Hill, SC was federated on February 25, 1954 and existed as a daughter club of the Perihelion Book Club of Rock Hill. The object of the club is listed in the constitution and states “this club shall be to encourage and sustain the intellectual development of its members and to promote better citizenship, inviting therein such social features as may contribute to this purpose.”

The focus of the collection primarily covers the League's publications and papers from their programs and activities. The inclusive dates range from 1929 to 1997, however, most materials are from the 1950s through the 1970s. The Huntington League's children's theater papers begin ca. 1929 (Series IV), and the cookbook can be found in the publication "League Lines".

They include a 1904 letter from Principal Corbly regarding an institution not accepting Childress’ teaching certificate, a pamphlet entitled “Flood Views of Huntington, W.Va.” [1913], a 1930 Marshall commencement program, a newspaper clipping about the death of Knute Rockne, official programs for the National Education Association from 1911 and 1936, a 1928 Marshall College Directory, a program for the Huntington Women’s Club’s Freiburg Passion Play, and the envelope the collection was received in.
