The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
Utah was severely affected by the Great Depression of the 1930's. Unemployment soared and thousands were forced to turn to the government for assistance. Yet, Wayne county, a small area in south central Utah was able to escape many of the devastating effects brought on by the failing economy. The residents of this isolated county eluded much of the despair and disillusionment felt throughout the country at this time. Alta Albrecht, a life-long resident of Wayne County, recalls the period like this, "People didn't have much, they didn't know the difference. They didn't expect much, but they were happy people."

Wirtschaftswunder: A Macroeconomic Study Of Germany, Connor M. Dollarhite
Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars
The German economy is currently known to be an economic powerhouse of the present, but it is a mystery to most as to why this is so. By investigating historical examples, we can determine whether proposed economic policy will work, and Germany proves useful to this idea through the continued historic usage of Eucken and Erhard’s economic theories that generated the German economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder). Germany has survived dark economic collapse and become thriving economic powerhouse today. This proliferation of success is through the three consistent pillars of their macroeconomic profile, balanced fiscal budget, maintaining price stability, and always allowing …

This study discusses the problems of both unemployment and inflation in the areas of the Palestinian National Authority, compare with the West Bank and the Gaza Strip separately, during the period (1997-2019). This study aims to show the strength of connection between unemployment and inflation in whole Palestinian economy, and the economy of both the West Bank and Gaza Strip, separately, highlighting the results of the most important statistical tests (F, T, DW, ARCH, LM, Godfrey Breusch-Pagan, White) between unemployment and inflation in the Palestinian economy as one unit, compared to the economies of the West Bank and Gaza Strip …
Battling Youth Unemployment In France: Can Macron Put Young People To Work?, Adriana C. Bolivar
Battling Youth Unemployment In France: Can Macron Put Young People To Work?, Adriana C. Bolivar
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
High unemployment has been a persistent struggle for the French economy, especially over the last 30 years under presidents Mitterrand, Chirac, Sarkozy, Hollande, and now Macron. In recent years, this problem has particularly plagued young workers making them the “lost generation” of Europe. This paper studies the history of youth unemployment in France and assesses the impact of government policies and cultural norms on young workers. Additionally, it highlights the trade-off between workers’ rights and economic growth in an attempt to draw attention to the importance of culture and context in development.
The factors that have driven French structural youth …
The Issue Of Unemployment Among People With Disabilities, Angelina C. Pagano
The Issue Of Unemployment Among People With Disabilities, Angelina C. Pagano
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
The rate of unemployment for people with disabilities continues to rise greatly above that of people without disabilities. The issue seems to be exacerbated by employer biases and concerns which are not supported in the face of evidence. A lack of employer education on disability related subjects causes this misconception among both employers and the public as a whole. To resolve the underlying problem of miseducation, an increase in the self-identification of people with disabilities is necessary to provide researchers with data to assist in the formation of a revised curriculum.

Poverty And Social Security Experiences In Australia: Experiences Of Wellbeing For Recipients Of The 2020 Jobseeker Payment, Kira Huntley
Poverty And Social Security Experiences In Australia: Experiences Of Wellbeing For Recipients Of The 2020 Jobseeker Payment, Kira Huntley
Theses : Honours
The relationship between poverty caused by social security payments below the poverty line and poor wellbeing among recipients has long been established in academic research. In April 2020, recipients of Australia’s main unemployment benefit, Newstart, were temporarily lifted out of poverty due to their transition onto JobSeeker, a payment implemented to support Australian workers affected by the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns in the first wave of the pandemic in 2020. This study sought to understand the experiences of wellbeing that receiving this increased payment and being embedded within a change policy framework engendered for participants who transitioned from Newstart to JobSeeker. …

Healing A Nation Wounded By A Pandemic, Blake Wetzel
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
Emerging in late 2019, the Covid-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the United States. There is still so much about this virus that is unknown. It has had a negative effect on education, the economy, and the lifestyle of Americans. Covid-19 has caused many people to be hospitalized, and has even claimed many lives. There are many things that the American people can do to help America and its people recover. Americans must take social responsibility. They must follow the guidelines, such as mask wearing and social distancing, to stop the virus from spreading. Americans can also help out …
Cooperating For Charity: The Effect Of Decentralization On French Associations, Ragan Ketrow
Cooperating For Charity: The Effect Of Decentralization On French Associations, Ragan Ketrow
Honors Theses
This thesis explored the relationship between the decentralization laws of 1982 and 1983 in France and French associations as well as the resulting lack of exceptionalism in the French nonprofit sector. This thesis explores the claims of the French nonprofit scholar Edith Archambault as she argues that the steep rise in associations in France in the 1980s is due to the legal changes that occured during that same decade. In order to evaluate these claims, I used regression tests to compare the relationship between the growth of associations and other variants including economic growth, disposable income, and government expenditure. In …
How Can Australian Actor Training Be Relevant In A World Of 86 Per Cent Unemployment?, Gabrielle Metcalf, Andrew Smith
How Can Australian Actor Training Be Relevant In A World Of 86 Per Cent Unemployment?, Gabrielle Metcalf, Andrew Smith
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Completing a University degree in actor training may have become a practice in absurdity. There is not enough work for most graduates to even pay the HECS debt that they would have accumulated over their three-year degree. What does this signify for the relevance of actor training, when most graduates can only look forward to a future of unemployment or at best, underemployment? This article charters territory for the Academy to navigate in order for actor training to become more relevant and its graduates better equipped to meet the challenges of the high unemployment rates in the arts industry. A …

A Study Of Unemployment And Underemployment In Clinical Music Therapy, Christopher A. Kelley
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Music therapy has been an established health profession for over 60 years serving a diverse population in different settings. Researchers studied the effects of burnout, career longevity, job satisfaction, and workforce analysis of clinical music therapy; however, no studies exist on the prevalence of unemployment and underemployment in clinical music therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of unemployment and underemployment in clinical music therapy.
Participants who completed an anonymous online survey (n = 1,240) were board-certified music therapists who provided information on their current employment status. Results showed that the prevalence of unemployment among …

Lived Experiences And Consequences Of Unemployment On Women: An Empirical Study Of Unemployed Young Women In Mahalapye, Botswana, Kabo Diraditsile, Mosetsanagape Alice Ontetse
Journal of International Women's Studies
Studies have shown that the experience and consequences of unemployment affect people differently depending on, for example, age and gender. The purpose of the present study was to identify factors that contribute to unemployment among young women aged 20-35 in Mahalapye village, investigate the effects of being unemployed, determine sources of support available to unemployed young women, and identify the gaps in state assistance in this regard. The study utilized a survey research method and adopted a descriptive research design. Cluster sampling was used with the sample size being one hundred (100) unemployed young women in Mahalapye. A face-to-face questionnaire …

A Note From A Naive, Soft-Hearted Liberal, Katia Rubinstein
SURGE
“I’m voting for Trump,” my step-dad announced this summer. Through and through he is Republican, but his backing of Trump still shocked me.
When I asked him why, he said that he thought Trump could bring change while Clinton would only bring the status quo. He wanted, in fewer words, to “Make America Great Again.”
When I provided him with Hitler’s speeches and Goebbels’s propaganda, comparing the threats made to the Jews with those made to undocumented immigrants today, he brushed it off. “It’ll never happen,” he said with a shrug. When I replied with the sentiment of concern, explaining …

The Bronx Cocked Back And Smoking is a collection of multifarious prose performances recounting the historical, personal, social, political and cultural constructs of a city birthed by violence. This body of work is accompanied by video, audio, photography, and theatre performance texts. St. Mary’s Housing project, in the Bronx, is the foundation where most of this literary work takes place. The modern day Griot (storyteller) is a Poet, guiding his audience through the social inequalities and disparities that plague St. Mary’s community. The Poet shares personal traumatic insights while simultaneously utilizing writing as a form of survival to the conditions …

Understanding The Employment Barriers And Support Needs Of People Living With Psychosis, Margaret Hampson, Richard Hicks, Bruce Watt
The Qualitative Report
This study investigated the employment barriers and support needs of people living with psychosis. A purposive community sample of 137 volunteers drawn from six key stakeholder groups were invited to participate in focus groups and semi-structured individual interviews to elicit their perceptions on the employment barriers and support needs of people living with psychosis. The stakeholder groups included in this study were people with lived experience of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, carers, health professionals, employers, employment service providers, and community members. Data obtained from 14 focus groups and 31 semi-structured individual interviews were transcribed, imported into NVivo 10, and coded …
The Economy And Mexican Immigrants, Austin Schulz
The Economy And Mexican Immigrants, Austin Schulz
2016 Symposium
This paper will focus on the economic impact that immigrants from Mexico, documented and undocumented, have on the United States economy. In this study, I use peer reviewed sources to show how much immigrants contribute to the economy; with how much they pay in taxes and the wages they earn as they toiled in their respective jobs. Additionally, this study explores the impact Mexican immigrants have on the unemployment rate of native born Americans as well as the U.S. national debt. This study also looks at the impact of undocumented immigration, and the cost/contributions to the US tax payers. Finally, …
The Choice Of Technology And Equilibrium Wage Rigidity, Haiwen Zhou
The Choice Of Technology And Equilibrium Wage Rigidity, Haiwen Zhou
Economics Faculty Publications
In this general equilibrium model, firms engage in oligopolistic competition and choose increasing returns technologies to maximize profits. Capital and labor are the two factors of production. The existence of efficiency wages leads to unemployment. The model is able to explain some interesting observations of the labor market. First, even though there is neither long-term labor contract nor costs of wage adjustment, wage rigidity is an equilibrium phenomenon: an increase in the exogenous job separation rate, the size of the population, the cost of exerting effort, and the probability that shirking is detected will not change the equilibrium wage rate. …
Working Hard Or Hardly Working?: An Examination Of Work Relief In Upstate New York 1931-1943, Maxwell Prime
Working Hard Or Hardly Working?: An Examination Of Work Relief In Upstate New York 1931-1943, Maxwell Prime
Honors Theses
Becoming the first U.S. state to provide direct funding and administrative support for work relief to its cities, counties and townships; with the creation of the Temporary Emergency Relief Administration in November of 1931, New York took its first steps in what would become a long tradition of work relief in the state. However, existing academic examinations of work relief in upstate New York in large part ignore activities in the state’s upstate region in favor of higher profile operations in New York City. This thesis attempts to chart the rise and developmental trajectory of work relief in upstate New …
An Analysis Of The Impact Of Housing Policies On Housing Prices In South Korea, Daeil Kwon
An Analysis Of The Impact Of Housing Policies On Housing Prices In South Korea, Daeil Kwon
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
The South Korean government has been intervening in the housing market for a long time to either activate or stabilize housing prices. However, there is a controversy about the effect of housing policy in South Korea. I analyzed the effect of housing policies as well as other factor s (interest rate, cost of renting, inflation, stock price, unemployment rate, exchange rate) on housing prices nationally as well as in northern Seoul and in southern Seoul, from January 2000 to January 2015 (181 months of data).
According to the results of my regression analysis to test the effect of housing policies, …

Black Youth Nonemployment: Duration And Job Search: Comment, Ronald Ehrenberg
Black Youth Nonemployment: Duration And Job Search: Comment, Ronald Ehrenberg
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
[Excerpt] Holzer's paper has a number of attributes that I find very appealing. It focuses on an important topic and uses two different data bases to test the robustness of its findings. It uses alternative specifications of the variable of interest (reservation wages), examines the sensitivity of the results to alternative sets of control variables, uses a variety of statistical methods to confront a number of statistical issues, and honestly reports cases in which any of the above leads to differences in results. Finally, the paper does not claim more than the evidence warrants—a feature not present in enough academic …

Poor Relief, Informal Assistance, And Short Time During The Lancashire Cotton Famine, George R. Boyer
Poor Relief, Informal Assistance, And Short Time During The Lancashire Cotton Famine, George R. Boyer
George R. Boyer
[Excerpt] This paper presents new evidence concerning the importance of poor relief as a source of income assistance for unemployed operatives during the Lancashire cotton famine. My comparison of weekly data on the number of relief recipients in 23 distressed poor law unions with estimates of weekly cotton consumption for the period November 1861 to December 1862 suggests that the average length of time between becoming unemployed and receiving poor relief was less than 2 months. This result is shown to be consistent with available evidence on working class saving. Given the meager amount of informal assistance available to them, …
[Review Of The Book Interwar Unemployment In International Perspective], George R. Boyer
[Review Of The Book Interwar Unemployment In International Perspective], George R. Boyer
George R. Boyer
[Excerpt] The book redresses two imbalances in the recent literature on interwar unemployment: its almost exclusive focus on the United States and Britain, and its predominantly macroeconomic nature. To achieve these goals, the editors encouraged the authors of the country studies to address a set of microeconomic issues, including the extent to which the incidence and duration of unemployment varied across economic and demographic groups, and the effect of unemployment on labor force participation and poverty. Two macroeconomic issues also are addressed in several of the papers: the effects of real wages and of unemployment insurance on unemployment. These two …
The Economic Role Of The English Poor Law, 1780-1834, George R. Boyer
The Economic Role Of The English Poor Law, 1780-1834, George R. Boyer
George R. Boyer
[Excerpt] Over the 85-year period from 1748/50 to 1832/34, real per capita expenditures on poor relief increased at an average rate of approximately 1 percent per year. There were also important changes in the administration of relief with respect to able-bodied laborers during the period. Policies providing relief outside of workhouses to unemployed and under-employed able-bodied laborers became widespread during the 1770s and 1780s in the grain-producing South and East of England. The so-called Speenhamland system of outdoor relief flourished until 1834, when it was abolished by the Poor Law Amendment Act. The aim of the thesis is to provide …
The Evolution Of Unemployment Relief In Great Britain, George R. Boyer
The Evolution Of Unemployment Relief In Great Britain, George R. Boyer
George R. Boyer
[Excerpt] Relatively little has been written about unemployment relief during the period between the passage of the Poor Law Amendment Act in 1834 and the adoption of national unemployment insurance in 1911. This study is an attempt to help fill the gap in the literature. It examines the changing roles played by poor relief, private charity, trade unions, and public employment in the lives of the urban unemployed during cyclical downturns from 1834 to 1911. The story that emerges offers no support for a "Whig theory of welfare." Public assistance for the unemployed was more generous, and more certain, from …
