Collective, Collage, And Translative Authorship: Writing To And From Multilingual Europe, Jamie H. Trnka

Letters to Europe (2011) is a collectively authored, transnational literary engagement with Europe as an idea, a place, and a set of socio-political relationships. A print publication and performance, the ambivalent generic status of the Brussels-based project raises productive questions about how collective translation, transnational authorship, and multimedial performance strategies combine to advance new modes of aesthetic and political representation for subjects in transit in twenty-first century Europe. I argue for attention to multilingual and multimedial translations as sites of creative self-documentation on the part of mobile subjects as a critical counterpoint to state-sanctioned forms of documentality (Favorini). Fixed expression and idioms are part of the translated discourse. They are ready-made constructions that summarize an idea or a concept by using outstanding formulas. Translate these expressions is a big challenge for the translator. Thus, a well done translation does not mean mastering the linguistic skills of both languages, since the text does not contain just linguistic facts. It is also about culture, emotions, connotations, style and the author’s genius. Formulaic language often presents significant issue in translation just as well as finding a fixed expression as equivalent.

This thesis proposes an analysis of the theorization and practice of “Christian lyricism” in Les Divines Poesies de Marc Antoine Flaminius, the second independently published collection by (and clearly attributed to) Anne de Marquets (1533?-1588), a French Dominican nun. Published in 1568 (Paris, Nicolas Chesneau) and reissued in a second edition in 1569 (Paris, Nicolas Chesneau), this volume includes not only translations of the Italian Neo-Latin poet Marcantonio Flaminio (1497/8-1550), some of whose works had already, by 1568, been put on the Vatican Index, but other translations by the Dominican nun, as well as original spiritual songs and sonnets. …

This thesis is a literary translation of French author Marion Guillot’s 2018 novel C’est moi. The work tells the story of a journey of self-discovery gone wrong. The unnamed narrator feels as if she and Tristan, her unemployed boyfriend, are slowly drifting apart as they put up with the daily domestic drudgery of their Parisian lives. They don’t really get out anymore and they never see anyone except Tristan’s only friend, Charlin, someone who the narrator doesn’t particularly care for. Is it possible to translate nonsense? If yes, then how?

Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” is a nonsense poem in which many of the words are invented out of the author’s imagination. As a result, readers depend on Carroll to explain the meanings of such words. The first stanza of “Jabberwocky,” chosen since it contains the largest number of nonsense words in the poem, was analyzed and compared to the first stanza of two French translations (“Le Jaseroque” by Frank L. Warrin and “Bredoulocheux” by Henri Parisot). A word-by-word, and to an extent, syllable-by-syllable close reading of the three texts was performed …

In 2016, a collection of previously unreleased audio-recorded interviews and dialogues with phenomenological philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty were transcribed and published in French in Entretiens avec Georges Charbonnier: et autres dialogues, 1946-1959. Here, to my knowledge, I have translated three of those interviews into English for the very first time. Given that these interviews were recorded for broadcast to the general public, they provide an accessible entry point into some of the thoughts of Merleau-Ponty. The first interview that I have translated is Merleau-Ponty explaining his research in Philosophy. The second interview discusses Husserl, the concept of lived experience, and the …
