Interfaith: one Shoe Size Fits All?

This paper explores interfaith activity through a social policy lens. Examining our contemporary world through the concepts of Globalisation, Migration, Immigration and Cosmopolitanism the paper reveals how there is not only a growth in ‘global’ phenomenon but also reveals a corresponding impact on local issues and identities.

A further discussion as to the nature of religion and the nature of religious belief in the global context raises the possibility of a framework for religious belief which can be applied to interfaith activity. This discussion also shows a shift in the cultural significance of religious …

Barbara Ann (Tucker) Mills writes of her life growing up in a home in Bowling Green, Kentucky that provided rooms and meals for students at Western Kentucky State Teachers College and Bowling Green Business University during the 1930s and 1940s. Her parents, known and “Ma Tucker” and “Pa Tucker,” operated boardinghouses located on College Street. Also includes two family photographs.

Clostridium acetobutylicum is a tricky little bacterium which can eat almost anything with carbohydrates and produce a fuel similar to ethanol. Recently, a researcher inserted its ability to make fuel into E. coli, a much more celebrated bacterium. Imagine how little Clostridium must have felt, having its only unique trait copied by the popular kid.

Graffiti in Latin America is often political. This thesis considers the political graffiti found at la Universidad Nacional (UNAL) in Bogotá, Colombia. Unlike many other nations in the region, Colombia has not experienced the same political history of repressive dictatorships. As a result, the current literature on political graffiti does not cover the outlier case of Colombia. This research uses survey responses from and interviews with students at UNAL in order to better understand what the graffiti says and how it impacts students at the university. Language instructors are well aware of the many challenges facing our profession. Financial pressures and fluctuating enrollments have caused many institutions to look critically at their language programs and curricula. Adding to these concerns is the lingering sentiment in some areas that foreign languages are not something that “you (really) need to know,” as Lawrence Summers stated in 2012 (Summers). Colleagues have produced impassioned defenses of the many benefits of language study (e.g. Geisler 2012), but ultimately we, as a profession, need to combine such efforts with the most effective and relevant language instruction we can provide. Racism and stereotypes are still very apparent in Ecuadorian society, yet time and time again, I have found people who claim racism does not exist in Ecuador. Fascinated by how such an obvious (for an outsider) part of Ecuadorian society could be systematically denied by so many people who were part of that society, I decided to explore the issue of racism further and sought to find out, through the use of in-depth qualitative interviews and ethnographic research, how students at La Universidad Estatal de Cuenca narratively construct racial identity and racism.
