Female Superheroes, Rhetorical Reading, And Feminist Imagination : A Study Of College-Aged Readers And Comic Book Reading Practices Using Eye Tracking And Cued Retrospective Interviews, Aimee Vincent May 2022

Female Superheroes, Rhetorical Reading, And Feminist Imagination : A Study Of College-Aged Readers And Comic Book Reading Practices Using Eye Tracking And Cued Retrospective Interviews, Aimee Vincent

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation uses feminist analysis and rhetorical genre studies to analyze the strategies used by college-aged students to read female superhero comic books. The dissertation responds to the growing trend of literature and writing instructors assigning comic books and graphic novels under the untested assumption that these texts are readily accessible to college students. This assumption contradicts what we have learned from studies of rhetorical reading strategies that found that readers analyze texts most effectively when readers are familiar with the text’s genre. In addition, the assumption ignores the specific rhetorical contexts of comics, including a problematic but powerful narrative …

An Illustrated Metamorphoses, Alexandria Devlin Apr 2022

An Illustrated Metamorphoses, Alexandria Devlin

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

This project was a comic consisting of five different myths from Ovid's Metamorphoses. My goal was to make it easier and more enjoyable for audiences to read classical myths, and give these stories a way to shine in the 21st century. Myths from many different cultures have been adapted into comics, but direct depictions are much less common than shaping mythological figures to fit a new story. I have yet to find a direct comic adaptation of Metamorphoses. Ovid's Metamorphoses is full of rich and interesting stories and deserves to be represented alongside other mythological tales.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The twenty-page comic includes a dialogue, taking place in various urban settings, between characters Kelly and Kristi who are based on National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC) researchers Kelly Clifton of the University of British Columbia and Kristina Currans of the University of Arizona. The Little Girl (Kinda), Hanna Kim May 2017

The Little Girl (Kinda), Hanna Kim

Masters Theses

My work has always been about the personal relationships I've had in the past. It is driven by the

nostalgia of what was, and how it came to be within the present. It is not the act of languishing in a better time or the need to replay a scenario from when life was thought to have been easier. It is replaying the past that makes me chuckle, even if at the time the said event was not so hilarious or amusing. While I am heavily influenced by the psychological workings of the human mind and sociology, I ultimately decided …

Spiritual Formation Of Young Adults In China: A Case Study Of Protagonists In Boxers And Saints, Xu Bian Jan 2016

Spiritual Formation Of Young Adults In China: A Case Study Of Protagonists In Boxers And Saints, Xu Bian

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

The thesis examines the spiritual development of young adult protagonists depicted in Boxers and saints by Gene Luen Yang using the framework of six spiritual components and the approach of critical content analysis. It shows that the six elements, journey, transcendence, community, religion, mystery of creation, and transformation, are involved regardless of different religions people are converted to. In addition, religions provide an avenue for spirituality to mature given that spirituality is an intrinsic and universal characteristic of human beings regardless of their religious beliefs or lack of them. Finally, spirituality is not superior to religions because of the two …

Eric Shanower And The Visual Mythography Of Age Of Bronze, Michael R. Hale Jun 2015

Eric Shanower And The Visual Mythography Of Age Of Bronze, Michael R. Hale

English Department Theses

Eric Shanower's groundbreaking comic series Age of Bronze is examined as a new kind of text, a mythographic text. By merging the classical Greek stories surrounding the Trojan War into a concise and linear graphic narrative, Shanower crafts a new kind of mythography through visual and textual media. This work aims to explore how mythography and comics intersect within Shanower's work.

Visualizing Hate: Maus As Holocaust Literature, Geoffrey Daniel Curran Jan 2013

Visualizing Hate: Maus As Holocaust Literature, Geoffrey Daniel Curran

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how Art Spiegelman's graphic novel Maus affected traditional classifications of Holocaust writings, specifically literary memoir. Genre studies use Holocaust writings especially those classified as "literary memoirs", to define a narrow group to exclusion of texts like Maus. If Maus was not 'allowed' to be defined as memoir then was it solely cast as fiction? To view it as fictional would have denied that Maus was a graphic novel which interlaces both received testimonial 'truth' and receptive 'truth'.

The Supreme Adventure : Brooklyn's Thrill-Kill Gang, And Mid Century Juvenile Justice, Mariah Adin Jan 2013

The Supreme Adventure : Brooklyn's Thrill-Kill Gang, And Mid Century Juvenile Justice, Mariah Adin

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This project uses a microhistorical approach to explore themes of mid-twentieth-century juvenile delinquency, censorship and post-Holocaust American Jewish identity. At the study's center is the Brooklyn Thrill-Kill Gang--a group of four Jewish boys, ranging in age from fifteen to eighteen years old--who went on a crime spree of assault and murder in the summer of 1954. That the boys came from what contemporaries labeled as "good" homes (i.e. middle class, two-parent households) and were on a path of upward-mobility made their behavior a mystery to most juvenile delinquency theorists of the day, who typically understood delinquent behavior as stemming from …

Comic Books Vs. Greek Mythology: The Ultimate Crossover For The Classical Scholar, Andrew S. Latham Apr 2012

Comic Books Vs. Greek Mythology: The Ultimate Crossover For The Classical Scholar, Andrew S. Latham

English Department Theses

The modern, serialized comic book is one of the most underutilized genres of literature in literary criticism today. While it is true that some graphic novels such as Alan Moore's Watchmen and Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns receive scholarly criticism, many monthly titles such as Action Comics or Batman are neglected by most of the scholarly community. The reason for this neglect cannot be traced to one single source, but it is unfortunate considering how valuable serialized comic books can be to modern scholars, particularly classical scholars studying Greek mythology. The similarities between the superheroes of serialized comic books …

Pedagogy Of Graphic Novels, Valarie L. Phelps Apr 2011

Pedagogy Of Graphic Novels, Valarie L. Phelps

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Graphic texts, or graphic novels, have spent many years on shelves with comic books about superheroes and adventurers. They officially gained notoriety in 1992 with Art Spiegelman’s Maus, and at this time, critics and scholars began to take notice. However, graphic novels have not been fully adapted by academia. Graphic novels have the ability to offer new levels of instruction and learning in upper-level classrooms.
The following is a study in the multitude of uses of graphic text in academia. Chapter 1 looks at the history of graphic text to understand the present and future of graphic novels. Chapter 2 …
