Framing Masculinity In The Poetry Of Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Margaret Garry Burke May 2009

Framing Masculinity In The Poetry Of Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Margaret Garry Burke

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper examines how the contemporary Irish poet, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, is destabilizing traditional notions of the masculine and feminine. Female Irish writers have been suppressed and silenced by a strong patriarchal society and it is interesting to study how Ni Dhomhnaill uses vivid masculine imagery to delineate new boundaries within the institutionalized male/female construction. The two works that I explore, “Nude” and “A God Shows Up,” represent her complex journey toward a strong feminine voice.

Who Are You What Are You Why?, Christopher Higgs, Caitlin Newcomer Apr 2009

Who Are You What Are You Why?, Christopher Higgs, Caitlin Newcomer

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

The two of us created "Who Are You What Are You Why?" together, as an experiment predicated on Wittgenstein's statement: "Do not forget that a poem, even though it is composed in the language of information, is not used in the language-game of giving information." We began this experiment by separately composing a series of non-contiguous questions and then "mashing" them together to form a virtual dialogue that provides only questions, never answers. What are the effects of composing using recognizable language in unrecognizable configurations? Where is the demarcation between sense and nonsense? How can we form meaning from seeming …

Map Of The Folded World, John Gallaher Apr 2009

Map Of The Folded World, John Gallaher

University of Akron Press Publications

Map of the Folded World, John Gallaher's third full-length collection, examines the eros and desperation of suburban America with the precision of a cartographer's eye. But as its title suggests, it does so according to the polar opposite of convention. More concerned with subtext than narrative, often childlike in tone and propelled by the logic of innocence, Gallaher's poems don't shy away from a bottom-line sensibility: “If you can just run fast enough,” one poem offers, “no one will ever die. // Do you remember that? / And are you better now?” This is a book filled with swimming …

Multiversal, Amy Catanzano Mar 2009

Multiversal, Amy Catanzano

Poetry

Multiversal, the second book by Amy Catanzano proposing a theory of quantum poetics, invites readers to explore the intersections between language, nature, science, and consciousness. Multiversal takes its name from the “multiverse,” a science fiction concept that has become an accepted theory in physics. It suggests that reality comprises multiple dimensions in space and time. In form and content, this collection takes novel approaches to the materiality of language itself, to the spacetime of poems.

From the Foreword by Michael Palmer:

Amy Catanzano offers us a poetic vision of multiple orders and multiple forms, of a fluid time set loose …

Southern Black Women: Their Lived Realities, Robin M. Boylorn Jan 2009

Southern Black Women: Their Lived Realities, Robin M. Boylorn

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Focusing on the lived experiences of ten rural black women in a familial community in central North Carolina, this project documents the mundane and extraordinary events of their lives and how they create meaningful lives through storytelling. Theoretically grounded in black feminist thought, intersectionality theory and muted group theory the investigation calls for the use of storytelling and poetry to understand how rural black women experience, live, and communicate their lives. Merging the experiences of participants with the researcher, the study also considers the ethical implications of being an insider-outsider and offers suggestions for engaging in creative scholarship. The author …
