Use(Ful In(Form)Ation, Dustin Lapray

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

I cleaned my room early in the spring of 2009, sorted laundry and cleaned off my oft-cluttered desk. In the process I found an old Mead Composition Notebook from a Film and Literature course I took at the College of Southern Idaho. Inside the back cover I discovered a page of useful information. The charts and measurements included: a multiplication table, 12 other tables intended to measure everything from paper, drugs, liquid and time, metric nomenclature and, finally, conversion tables from the metric system into American standard systems of measurement. I tore the back cover from the notebook and tacked …

Why We Love Dusk, Scott C. Kratochvil

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis is a collection of original poems written at the University of Nebraska while studying literature. The introductory essay briefly explores what "truth" might mean at this time in history and whether or not we can do without it. The poems that follow are arranged like a chapbook so that they might influence each other and affect a reader together in ways that they could not otherwise.

The Oval, 2010

The Oval

College has its own culture, jargon, and rituals much like a country. We only live in this country for four years, but when we want to revisit, we do not have yearbooks, nor can we keep every weekly Kaimin newspaper. The Oval, a literary magazine with stories, visual art, and poetry captures themes, emotions, and memories experienced at college that a record-book cannot. In the third edition of The Oval, we hear a variety of voices speaking of unique experiences, but they all come from the same country—they’re University of Montana undergraduates.

Clinton F. Larson: "I Miss His Booming Laugh", Neal E. Lambert Apr 2010

Clinton F. Larson: "I Miss His Booming Laugh", Neal E. Lambert

BYU Studies

Certainly, the last word regarding Clinton Larson's poetry has not been written. We can be grateful that this collection will make possible a better understanding and a fuller appreciation of what this extraordinary person and pioneer has done. I think it appropriate to conclude with Richard Cracroft's own assessment of his friend. He said to be, as he regretfully handed this assignment off, "I love Clinton. He was a wonderful colleague, good-humored friend, remarkable poet; his contribution to Mormon letters is considerable, influential, and ongoing. I miss his booming laugh." So do we all.

Would That All God's Children Were Poets, Casualene Meyer Apr 2010

Would That All God's Children Were Poets, Casualene Meyer

BYU Studies

BYU Studies poetry editor Causalene Meyer discusses the qualities of high-quality poetry. She tells how poetry is selected for publication in the BYU Studies journal and as winners in the BYU Studies poetry contest. Winning poems are more than just images, advice, stories, or snapshots. Insightful and elegant poems combine a view with a vision; the best poetry serves readers with substance and purity. Meyer includes statements by three poetry judges, Professors Justin Blessinger, Sirje Kiin, and Jack Walters.

Daybook, Sydny Loughlin Apr 2010

Daybook, Sydny Loughlin

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

The daybook assignment in the Honors Composition class was a daily homework exercise students were required to do in order to expand their expression and writing skills. We could respond to any prompt of our choice or we could take it as an opportunity to explore a more poetic area of interest. Consisting of 50 total pieces, I decided to turn my Daybook assignment into a daily log of poetry.

Requiem For The Orchard, Oliver De La Paz Feb 2010

Requiem For The Orchard, Oliver De La Paz

University of Akron Press Publications

These are vivid, visceral poems about coming of age in a place “where the Ferris Wheel/ was the tallest thing in the valley,” where a boy would learn “to fire a shotgun at nine and wring a chicken’s neck/ with one hand by twirling the bird and whipping it straight like a towel.” Looking back, the poet wrestles with the meaning of labor in the apple orchards and “the filthy dollars we’d wad into our pockets,” or the rites of passage that included sinking a knife into the flank of a dead chestnut horse. In spite of such hardscrabble cruelties—or …
