Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 2295. Diary of Johanna Louisa "Josie" Underwood, the daughter of a prominent Bowling Green, Kentucky family. She records her experiences while living in Scotland, where her father was serving as consul, from 1862 to 1864. She also describes her travel through several European countries and her return to the United States in 1864, when the family spent a year in San Francisco. She writes observantly about places and people, news of the Civil War, and family events. The diary includes a few early entries by her mother and summaries of family members's whereabouts …

Letters of Cincinnatus Douglas Bell, written from Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia while serving in Woodward's 2nd Kentucky Cavalry (C.S.A.) during the Civil War, and two diaries kept mostly during his service in Tennessee. Also includes other correspondence of Bell, his wife Anne, and members of the Bell family. Several letters extend sympathy on the death of Bell's daughter Minnie.

Battlestar Galactica, a television series that aired on the SyFy Channel from 2003 to 2009, tells the story of the Twelve Colonies, a human society whose home planets have been destroyed by a race of robots, the Cylons. These androids, originally created by mankind as a slave workforce, have at the moment of their revolution evolved to become physically indistinguishable from humans, and, after they turn against their creators, as the Internet Movie Data Base tag line puts it: "The fight to save humanity rages on." The concept behind this year's theme, "Bold," actually came from concepts our art director, Melissa, showed us during our first meeting. We had tossed around ideas of "Timeless," "Enduring," and "Vintage," amidst our discussions of how in the world we were going to raise money for the journal this year. With the economy tanking, we knew art programs like ours would be the first to suffer. We wanted to find a theme that captured how we felt about art and how art made us feel. This collection contains tape recorded interviews (28) conducted by Luanne Glynn with Ellis Yeargin Hurt (1900-1994) of Cadiz, Trigg County, Kentucky. The interviews relay Ellis's life history. The project also includes an interpretive paper, a project proposal and summary as well as tape indexes. This project was the result of a folk studies class at Western Kentucky University.

The Nightingale Of Austerlitz, Lindsay Marianna Walker

The Nightingale of Austerlitz employs poetry, fiction, and nonfiction to articulate the theme of (mis)communication. A pliable, multi-genre approach was necessary to convey the urgency of two central characters’ desire to connect despite the impossibility of doing so. Prose interrupts and challenges the set precision of poetry in order to embody the stops and starts—the literal and figurative breakdowns—of communication. The juxtaposition of genres dramatizes dialogue, silence, affective distance, and desire. Song, sound, repetition (using lullaby, referencing music, thematizing the ear) further assert the power of language as performance and aesthetics as consolation, and provoke a particular kind of attention …
